Clarksville, TN – It’ll be a rollicking good time when Clarksville Roller Derby League’s Red River Sirens team take on the West KY Rockin’ Rollers in the “Hillbilly HoDown” on July 16th at Magic Wheels, 1671 Fort Campbell Boulevard. Doors open at 6:00 and the action begins at 7:00pm. Tickets are $10.00 at the door, with children aged 12 and younger admitted free. Show a valid military ID for a discount on official Sirens team logo merchandise.
This is the Red River Sirens’ second home bout and the third contest of their inaugural season. In June, they traveled to Marion, Illinois and defeated So. Ill Rollergirls with a score of 136-102.
The bout will consist of two 30-minute periods with an intermission. Halftime entertainment will be provided by The Nixies, the official “jeerleaders” for the Sirens. A beer garden will operate outside the skating facility, and snacks will be available at the Magic Wheels concession stand.
In keeping with the modern roller derby custom of community support, Red River Sirens will donate a portion of the proceeds from bouts to benefit charitable organizations. The beneficiary for “Hillbilly HoDown” is Companion Pet Rescue & Transport, a rescue organization that places pets in foster homes until permanent homes can be found. Bout attendees can participate by bringing a donation to the bout for the organization. The organization’s “Wish List” includes: blankets and towels; bleach and other cleaning supplies; dog kennels, houses and crates; newspapers; dog and puppy food; cedar chips; tarps; Kong toys.
The Red River Sirens formed in 2010 and are Clarksville’s Roller Derby League’s first team. To qualify for the team, skaters are required to pass the minimum skills test established by the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA). In addition to team and individual athletic training, skaters hold positions on various committees to keep the all-volunteer organization running.
