Austin Peay State University Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Kayla Davidson homered twice for Austin Peay State University’s softball team Wednesday afternoon at Cheryl Holt Field, including a walk-off game-winner in the nightcap, as the Lady Govs swept Trevecca by scores of 8-4 and 2-1.

With the scored tied 1-1 and extra innings looming, Davidson — a sophomore third baseman from South Fulton – hit a 2-2 pitch out to straight away center field off Trevecca starter Natalie Papini to lift the Lady Govs to the victory and even their season record at 4-4.

Trevecca (2-2) had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning on a Breanna Zeis two-out single scoring Kari Mason, who led off the inning with a base hit.

But that run was all the Trojans would get off Austin Peay’s junior starter Morgan Brewer (2-2), as she limited Trevecca to four hits and two walks, while striking out six.

The Lady Govs would tie the game 1-1 in the bottom of the third, when Brewer would lead off the inning by getting on after being hit by a pitch.

Morgan BrewerSophomore Tia Johnson, who prepped locally at Kenwood High School, came in to run for Brewer and moved into scoring position at second base on a sacrifice bunt by Davidson.

Johnson would score an out later, as freshman Lauren Bradley doubled over the head of Trevecca center fielder Ansley Brantley to score Johnson.

In game 1, Trevecca took an early 1-0 lead in the top if the first inning off Lady Govs sophomore starter Lauren de Castro, as she the Trojans leadoff hitter swung and missed on a third strike, but it was a wild pitch and Mason reached before Austin Peay’s senior catcher Amy Mills could track the ball down.

Lauren de CastroA passed ball would move Mason into scoring position and Lindsey Stephans drove her in with a single.

The score would remain that way until the bottom of the third inning, when Davidson crushed a pitch out over the fence, just to the right of straight away center, to tie the game 1-1.

Trevecca would retake the lead 4-1 by scoring three runs in the top of the fifth inning on a bases-loaded triple by Stephans.

The Lady Govs would add some insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, as red-shirt junior Jessica Ryan smacked a three-run pinch home run out to left center field to make it 8-4.

Austin Peay is now off until March 2nd, when they travel to Tulsa to play in the Hyatt Downtown Tulsa Tournament.
