Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillan’s Labor Day Message

City of Clarksville - Clarksville, TNClarksville, TN – For more than 120 years, Americans have celebrated Labor Day as a way to recognize the countless contributions American workers have made to our nation.

On this special day, I want to thank all Clarksvillians who continue to bring about our community’s strength and prosperity.

Labor Day is unlike most of our national holidays. Today is a day to recognize not just what has come before us but what we are doing right now.

Today we celebrate more than previous accomplishments; it is a day to take pride in the work we do, our commitment to that work and the change we make in the world through our efforts. It’s a day to pat each other on the back with congratulations and heartfelt thanks for jobs well done. It’s a time to remember that without a strong and dedicated workforce, our lives would be very different.

From those who pave the streets we drive to work to the people behind the counters where we buy lunch and the ushers who work in the movie theatres we will attend this weekend, every worker has a role to play and makes a difference.

One of my very favorite quotes is from Dr. Martin Luther King: “If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music, or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, here lived a great street sweeper who did his job well.”

This is the very essence and heart of Labor Day.

As we join together to celebrate and spend time with family and friends during this weekend which also serves as the unofficial end of summer (and the beginning of football season!), I want to send a special thank you to the employees of the City of Clarksville who work so hard to make our community strong, vibrant and safe.

I wish each of you a safe and fun Labor Day holiday. Thank you for all you to do make Clarksville the best place to live, work and raise our families.
