APSU Governors Basketball unable to stop Morehead State Rally

Morehead, KY – Morehead State went on a 14-0 second-half run and Austin Peay State University never recovered as the Governors’ Ohio Valley Conference road woes continued in a 75-65 defeat, Wednesday night, in Johnson Arena.

The loss dropped the Govs to 9-14 overall and 2-6 in the OVC—it was the Govs’ third road loss without a victory. Morehead State, meanwhile, rebounded from Sunday’s loss to Jacksonville State to improve to 11-9 overall and 5-3 in the OVC.

After trailing the Eagles, 28-23, at halftime, the Governors scratched their way to a 31-30 lead as Khalil Davis and Josh Robinson both hit three pointers before Chris Horton hit a pair of free throws with 17:16 left in the half.

But that lead proved to be short lived. Just 15 seconds later, Treshaad Williams tipped in a missed shot to regain the lead for the Eagles and he also ended the 14-0 run with a dunk with 13:31 left.

In fact, the Eagles scored on the seven consecutive trips. In the interim, the Governors had five turnovers and three missed shots as the game’s momentum completely swung Morehead State’s way.

The lead remained double digits much of the final half, although the Govs made a brief late-game 5-0 run with 2:29 left to cut the lead to eight, 67-58. But that was close as the Governors could get as the Governors were unable to contain the Eagles offensively as the home team shot 20 of 32 (63 percent) in the final half.

Horton led all scorers with 22 points on 7-of-10 floor shots and an 8-of-8 effort at the free-throw. He fell one rebound shy of a double-double with nine.

Robinson ended with 13 on just 4-of-13 shoot while Khalil Davis added 11.

APSU shot just 44 percent (22 of 50) from the floor, including 50 percent in the second half. But 16 turnovers helped lead to the Governors undoing.

The Eagles, playing a second straight game without leading scorer Corban Collins, placed five players in double figures. Xavier Moon led the way with 16 points while DeJuan Marrero and Anthony Elechi added 14 and 13 points, respectively, pounding their way inside for 18 of those points in the final half. Brent Arrington added 10 points and 11 assists as the Eagles produced 22 assists on 33 baskets.

This was the first of five straight OVC road games for the Governors, who will play Southeast Missouri, 4:15pm, Saturday, in the Show-Me Center.
