APSU Govs take down Southeast Missouri Redhawks, 61-50

APSU Women's BasketballCape Girardeu, MO – Austin Peay State University women’s basketball team halted their two-game skid with an 11-point triumph over the Southeast Missouri, Saturday, February 3rd. The final score was 61-50.

After a tough road loss Thursday, the Austin Peay (13-10, 6-6 OVC) defense came out aggressive against the Redhawks, forcing six turnovers in the opening quarter, and holding Southeast Missouri (11-13, 6-6 OVC) to a three minute scoring drought after their first possession.  

Second quarter struggles have been a theme for Austin Peay this season, but the Govs put those behind them, shooting 47.4 percent in the second quarter and  outscoring the Redhawks 24-12 in the second period.

The Govs defense collected five steals in the first half, as the offense posted 18 bench points, giving the Govs a six point cushion at the halftime break.

APSU Basketball - Brianne AlexanderComing out of the half, both teams worked to create opportunities on the offensive end to no avail. The Govs won the defensive duel in the quarter, outrebounding the Redhawks 11-8 in the third period, collecting three steals and scoring 10 points.

Brianne Alexander came alive in the fourth quarter scoring 12 points on 4-for-6 shooting. Alexander was aggressive underneath the basket, surpassing her previous career high of 23 points set at Belmont, January 20th. Alexander’s mentality on the offensive end was contagious defensively as the Governors held Southeast Missouri to 1-for-12 shooting to close the game.

Alexander’s career high 26 points led all scorers as she pulled down seven rebounds going 8-for-9 from the stripe to pad her stat line. Brianah Ferby scored 10 of the Governors’ 24 bench points, while Arielle Gonzalez-Varner pulled down a career high 12 rebounds.

Game Notes

APSU Basketball - Brianah FerbyAustin Peay gets the season sweep against Southeast Missouri, winning a close matchup at home January 6th, 66-65 and the 11-point road matchup, Saturday.

Alexander’s 26 points is a career high, she tied her previous career high 23 points at Belmont January 20th.

Gonzalez-Varner recorded a career high 12 rebounds, including eight offensive boards.

The Govs recorded 24 points in the paint and won the bench battle scoring 24 points compared to the Redhawks seven.

Austin Peay shot 90.9 percent from the free throw line throughout the game, only missing two free-throw shots in the game.

The Govs outrebounded Southeast Missouri 41-29.

Two Governors scored in double digits: Alexander (26) and Ferby (10).

The Governors will move into the second half of their four-game road swing 3:00pm, Thursday, February 8th at Murray State.
