APSU Beach Volleyball steamrolls UT Martin in doubleheaderAPSU Sports Information

(APSU Sports Information) The No. 5 pairing of Caroline Waite and Nina Korfhage battled with Skyhawks’ Lindsey Geurin and Gintari Mackeviciute as the Govs dropped the first set in extra volleys, 20-22, but bounced back in extra volleys in the second set, 23-21. Korfhage and Waite wrapped things up in the third set winning 15-10 to give the Govs a 2-0 lead against UT-Martin. In the No. 3 pairing, Brooke Moore and Ciera Koons looked strong in their match against UT Martin’s Justine Walker and Megan Fair and won in straight sets with both sets finishing 21-10. After going 4-0 in their matches against North Alabama and Morehead State last week, Jenna Panning and Haley Turner moved to the No. 1 pairing against the Skyhawks. Turner and Panning stepped up to their competition of Brooke Gyori and Hannah Phillips for the Skyhawks and defeated them in straight sets, 21-17, 21-18. Just like the No. 5 pairing, the Skyhawks’ Karen Scanlon and Kenzie Hinshaw of the No. 2 pairing took the first set,15-21. The Governors’ Ginny Gerig and Cori Theiss bounced back in extra volleys in the second set, 23-21, before defeating the Skyhawks in the third set, 15-13 to secure the sweep in Match One, After falling behind 1-0 in Match Two, the No. 4 pairing and for the Governors of Randall and Stitt had a tighter match against Conley and Reynolds. The SKyhawks duo took the first set, but the Governors capped off the three-set finish 21-19 in the second and 15-10 in the third. For the top three pairings, the Governors felt eager and hungry to finish out the day 2-0 against the Skyhawks. In the No. 3 pairing, Theiss and Gerig emerged victorious in straight sets against UT Martin’s Fair and Walker, 21-13, 21-16. Koons and Moore jumped out on fire with an early lead as they cruised in straight sets in the No. 2 pairing against Hinshaw and Scanlon, 21-14, 21-11. To finish off the day, Turner and Panning defeated Phillips and Gyori in straight sets, 21-17, 21-14 to give the Govs the 4-1 margin of victory. Head coach Taylor Mott was all smiles after her team dominated in its doubleheader. The Governors will head to Conway, South Carolina to finish their ASUN Conference play this weekend against Jacksonville State and Coastal Carolina, beginning Friday morning against the Gamecocks of Jacksonville State.
