A second-round 298—the ninth-best showing in a field of 53 teams—took the APSU Govs from 42nd into 29th heading into the final day of competition.

The 22-shot improvement from the first 18 holes to the second was the third-best showing, while the 13-spot climb on the leaderboard was easily the best of the day; James Madison was the only other program with a double-digit jump, going from 21st to 11th.

“We had a come to Jesus meeting last night and the girls responded with really solid rounds today,” said Austin Peay State University head coach Jessica Cathey. We made a lot more birdies but we still left a handful out there too. Tomorrow we’ll look to get redemption [at Oak Point].”

Both Taylor Dedmen and Meghann Stamps sit among the top-75 competitors heading into the final day. Dedmen’s second-round 70 launched her nearly 100 spots up the leaderboard, from 140th to 52nd; nearly as impressive was Stamps’ climb from 160th to 69th thanks to a second-round 71. Dedmen carded six birdies on the day, with Stamps adding five; Dedmen’s work on par-3 holes was especially good, putting her among the elite in the field with a 2.89 stroke average over the first two days on par-3 holes.

APSU’s top first-round finisher, sophomore Shelby Darnell started out strong at even-par through her first six holes; she took home a 76 for the day to make her and Dedmen the only two Govs in the 70s in both rounds. She’s tied for 80th overall at 152.

Payton Elkins (85-81) and Riley Cooper (85-84) wrapped up the day for the APSU Govs. Elkins closed her day by sinking one of only nine round-two birdies on the 390-yard par-4 No. 9.

The Govs are back at it to close out the Kiawah Island Classic, Tuesday. Austin Peay State University will be paired with Youngstown State, Radford and North Alabama in foursomes off Hole Nos. 1-3 at Oak Point at 7:30am (CT).
