Customs House Museum Invites Adults to Learn Rag Weaving During Sunday Studio Workshop: Crafting with Laicee Blackwell

Customs House Museum & Cultural CenterClarksville, TN – The Customs House Museum & Cultural Center is giving adults an opportunity to explore a traditional textile art while creating something practical and sustainable during its upcoming Sunday Studio Workshop: Crafting with Laicee Blackwell
on June 21st, 2026.

Beginning at 2:00pm, local artist Laicee Blackwell will lead participants through the fundamentals of rag weaving, a time-honored craft that transforms worn fabrics into durable, functional items. During the workshop, attendees will learn how to repurpose strips of old T-shirts into weaving material and create their own handmade woven coasters.

The class is part of the museum’s Sunday Studio series, a collaborative program presented in partnership with Austin Peay State University’s Community School of the Arts. Designed specifically for adults, the series offers hands-on opportunities to explore various artistic techniques while learning from experienced instructors.

Rag weaving has long been valued as a practical and sustainable craft, allowing makers to breathe new life into textiles that might otherwise be discarded. Participants will gain insight into the weaving process while creating a unique project they can take home and use.

The workshop is free to attend, and all materials will be provided. However, registration is required due to limited space.

Sunday Studio programs encourage creativity, lifelong learning, and community engagement by introducing participants to a variety of artistic traditions and contemporary crafts. Whether attendees are experienced makers or complete beginners, the workshop offers a welcoming environment to learn a new skill and connect with fellow art enthusiasts.

The Customs House Museum & Cultural Center continues to offer educational and cultural programming throughout the year, providing residents and visitors with opportunities to experience art, history, and creativity in meaningful ways.
