“Cave Tours Are Back in Session” led the issue with the return of guided tours at Dunbar Cave, the naturally cool local landmark that offers relief from the August heat and a window into the area's natural history. The cave holds a cherished place in local memory, its underground passages having drawn Clarksvillians for generations, and the return of tours gave families a natural, affordable way to close out the summer together.
With the school year approaching, “Apps for Learning” helped parents sort through the educational technology available to support their children, and “Tennessee's Promise” revisited the tuition-free college program as graduating seniors planned ahead. “Health: A Family Affair” made the case for wellness as a household pursuit, and a feature on local TV stars added a note of hometown celebrity, alongside cosmetic-surgery coverage.
The recurring departments round out an August number built for the turn toward the school year — balancing one last adventure with the practical business of getting kids ready to learn.
The cave feature put readers right at the iron gate. Kala led the group through it and onto the damp path, the cave's brisk cool air a welcome relief from the 92 degrees outside; she latched the gate behind the last of them and opened the tour with an explanation of the elusive cave salamanders that make their home in the entrance's twilight zone. As flashlight shadows flickered across the limestone, the group fell silent — reverent, the writer noted, as if they had stepped into a museum or a library.
