“Going Green” led the issue with a look at sustainability and eco-friendly living, catching a moment when environmental awareness was moving from the fringes into everyday family life. The magazine met that shift with practical, approachable ideas for reducing a household's footprint rather than any preaching.
“Curb Appeal” gave homeowners guidance on a property's first impression, timely for the season of yard work and home improvement, while “Summer Playhouse” spotlighted local theater and the season's performing-arts opportunities. “Seasons of Our Journey” added a reflective feature, and an Interview offered a closer look at a person of local interest.
The recurring departments round out a June number that balances eco-conscious living, home improvement and summer theater — the responsible, the practical and the entertaining in the same welcoming pages. It is a snapshot of a community beginning to think differently about its habits, its homes and its footprint as summer gets underway.
The issue's interview sat down with portrait photographer David Barbee, whose work Clarksville Family readers already knew from several of his cover portraits. Born in Fort Benning, Georgia and raised partly in Japan before his father's posting to Fort Campbell brought the family to Clarksville in the sixth grade, Barbee had spent more than seventeen years behind the lens and earned the rigorous Professional Photographers of America certification. He recalled the intimidation of his first 35mm camera — “all of these buttons, and numbers, and settings” — and the moment he started shooting anyway and simply loved it.
