The issue welcomed a genuine sports legend: “Softball Legend Crystl Bustos Visits Clarksville” spotlighted the Olympic gold-medalist slugger's appearance in the community. One of the most feared hitters in the history of Olympic softball, Bustos made her Clarksville appearance a genuine thrill for the area's young players — the kind of brush with greatness a small city doesn't forget.
The Parade of Homes took readers inside the area's showcase houses, a popular look at local design, craftsmanship and the region's growing housing market, while “Redneck Workout” brought a fun, down-home take on fitness. “Constitution Week” marked the September observance with a look at the founding document, and the health pages covered sleep disorders and their treatments alongside a seasonal “Hot Toddies” feature.
The recurring departments round out a September number that balances sports celebrity, local homes and civic pride — a city proud of its athletes, its homes and its history, with a little down-home humor mixed in.
The “Hot Toddies” of the issue were not a drink but a running group. Since the previous spring its members had run whenever they could — finding a babysitter, hitting the YMCA, whatever it took — in matching black shirts embossed with an impassioned pink smiley, united by a single cause. Their inspiration was Todd Lowell, who met his wife Erin while both were deployed to Iraq in 2004, married in 2007, settled in Clarksville, and in October 2009 was diagnosed with adenocarcinoma, a lung cancer.
