The cover feature, “Off to See the Wizard,” celebrated a local production drawing on the beloved Wizard of Oz, bringing a note of theatrical magic to the spring issue.
The Rivers & Spires 2014 festival got its due as one of Clarksville's signature spring events, the downtown celebration of music, food and family that draws crowds from across the region each April. The issue leaned into the season with gardening guidance: “The Best Fruits and Veggies for Spring Gardens” and “3 Ways Gardening Benefits Your Health” encouraged readers to dig in, both for the harvest and the well-being that comes with it. The health pages covered “Balancing Pilates or Yoga” and addressed when thumb-sucking becomes a problem.
The recurring departments round out an April number built around the joys of spring — festivals downtown, gardens taking root, families making the most of longer days — paired with the everyday guidance that helps a household thrive, the magazine at its springtime best.
“Off to See the Wizard” sent readers literally down the yellow brick road: an award-winning traveling exhibit based on L. Frank Baum's 1900 classic and W. W. Denslow's illustrations, opening that month in the Customs House Museum's Crouch Gallery. Produced by the Great Explorations Children's Museum of St. Petersburg, it used the beloved story to explore art, science, history and literature all at once — a literary classic turned into a hands-on family outing.
