“Camp Rainbow — Making Dreams Come True” led the issue with a moving look at the camp that creates joyful experiences for children facing serious challenges. The feature captured the warmth of the place from the inside — the excitement of campers arriving on a Monday, the shared dinner each evening, and the joy, in one counselor's words, of meeting the new campers and seeing them experience it all for the first time.
“Panhandling in Clarksville” took on a thornier civic subject, a piece of substantive local journalism that didn't shy from complexity. “Clarksville's Downtown Market Returns” welcomed back the seasonal gathering of local growers and makers, while “Backyard Bird Bounty” found its writer watching woodpeckers from a perch on the wood privacy fence. The health pages offered “7 Screening Tests for Women,” “Get the Glycemic Green Light,” and “Play It Safe, Protect Your Face.”
The recurring departments round out a May number that ranges from the heartwarming to the hard — a camp making dreams come true beside an unflinching look at panhandling, giving the issue both compassion and courage as the community steps into late spring with its eyes open.
Camp Rainbow, a tradition since 1983, exists to bring big smiles to little faces — children living with life-threatening or life-altering circumstances. At its usual summer home the campers can do just about anything they want, from fishing and canoeing to crafts to climbing on helicopters flown in from Fort Campbell. Most are local, and many come back year after year for as long as they are age-eligible, the returning faces a quiet measure of what the week means to them.
