“Reflections on Labor” opened the issue in step with the Labor Day season, considering the meaning of work and the people whose labor sustains the community, while “A Time to Harvest” turned toward the fruits of the season as summer gave way to fall.

“Reaping the Benefits of Local Honey” made the case for the golden local product, exploring how honey from nearby hives supports both health and the area's beekeepers. The health pages addressed a seasonal worry with “When Kids' Allergies Strike in the Fall,” helping parents manage the sniffles that arrive with the changing leaves, and “Building Strong Bones Without Milk” offered alternatives for readers seeking calcium beyond the dairy aisle. An Athletics feature rounded things out.

The recurring departments round out a September number that turns, with the season, toward harvest and reflection — the meaning of labor, the sweetness of local honey and the changing rhythms of fall, the kind of gentle, seasonal issue that makes a reader want to buy a jar of local honey and appreciate the change of season a little more deliberately.

Pamela Roddy Magrans's “Reflections on Labor” had fun with the holiday's very name. Why, she wondered, do we have a holiday called Labor — and what makes it happy? The labor in question isn't childbirth, or the mechanic's billable time, or the work of chiseling a muffin top into a six-pack. So why must the banks close and the postwoman take the day off — and, most pressingly, why can't the kids just go to school, since they'd only just started?
