The cover story, “The Loos Family's Cancer Fight,” belongs to young Rhyan Loos, whose mother Jen has chronicled her fight against neuroblastoma — the same little girl whose battle the Austin Peay basketball team had rallied around during its improbable 2016 championship run. The feature follows the family's trips to New York City for radiation of Rhyan's brain and spine, and to what Jen calls “the mecca for neuroblastoma” — an unflinching, deeply local account of a family's hardest fight.
“A New Year — A New You?” brought a thoughtful, slightly skeptical eye to the season of resolutions, encouraging changes that actually last rather than the sweeping pledges most people abandon by February, while “Leave Cigarettes in the Ashes” made the case for quitting smoking as the new year began.
The recurring departments round out an issue that opens 2017 with equal parts empathy and encouragement — real about the hard things, hopeful about what readers can change. The Loos family's story lingers: a reminder that behind every diagnosis is a household reorganizing itself around hope, and a community ready to close ranks in support.
Karen Parr-Moody's feature laid out the family's ordeal in full. Like many children with neuroblastoma, young Rhyan Loos's cancer had already spread by the time it was found — into her bone marrow, making it stage 4, with the primary tumor sitting atop her adrenal gland. Until the diagnosis, the Loos family's life had seemed picture-perfect: Brad, a son of legendary Austin Peay basketball coach Dave Loos, had followed his father into the game, before the family's world reorganized itself entirely around a fight for their daughter.
