The cover feature, “DAC Celebrates the Democracy of Photography,” spotlighted the Downtown Artists Co-op and the medium that lets anyone with a camera become an artist, noting a local photographer who had recently won a second-place award in the Portrait/Figure Study category. The co-op mounted its display from February 1st to the 24th.

“Empty Bowls, Full Hearts” returned to the hunger-relief fundraiser in which guests choose a handmade ceramic bowl and fill it with soup — charity made tangible. The Candlelight Ball spotlighted the Austin Peay tradition, while “Dancing the Crime Away” added a community event and a “Streets & Neighborhoods” feature wandered into the Italy-inspired charm of a local spot called “Venezia Vialetto.” The health pages opened with “Dietary Tips Your Heart Will Love” for American Heart Month.

The recurring departments round out a February number that pairs the head and the heart — heart-healthy eating, the generosity of Empty Bowls and the Candlelight Ball, and the creativity of a photography co-op, a mix that gives the shortest month genuine range.

“Dietary Tips Your Heart Will Love” put the American Heart Association's advice in plain terms: fill your plate with nutrient-rich foods high in fiber and protein and low in sugar, and mind what you leave off too — saturated fat, sodium and trans fats. What you don't eat, it stressed, matters as much as what you do. For readers wanting a place to start, it pointed toward a handful of heart-healthy superfoods drawn from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.
