Riverfest headlined the issue as summer wound down — Clarksville's longest-running festival, marking 32 years on the banks of the Cumberland, the unofficial send-off to the season for tens of thousands of residents.
The cover, as the feature admitted, was made to catch your eye: an amazing photo from the Wife Carrying Contest, the delightfully unusual event in which competitors race while hauling a partner over their shoulders — equal parts athletic and absurd. “Hop on This!” charted Clarksville's growing craft-beer scene, which had expanded steadily over the last decade into a genuine local movement. “Leading Our Way” profiled James (J.C.) Matthews, who at just 32 was making a name for himself in Clarksville — a Dyersburg native representing the next generation of local leadership.
The recurring departments round out an August number that captures the width of late summer in Clarksville — a 32-year festival, a gloriously absurd race, a craft-beer scene coming into its own, and a young leader on the rise, tradition and novelty side by side.
Riverfest anchored the issue at 32 years and counting — Clarksville's longest-running festival, with something for every age. But the number was packed: Tony Centonze interviewed local comedian D.J. Pryor, whose video of an adorable “conversation” with his baby son Kingston had gone viral and led to a national commercial and more, and a companion feature charted Clarksville's burgeoning craft-beer industry. Between the festival, the viral dad and the taprooms, the August number captured a city thoroughly enjoying the tail end of a long, warm summer, festival and taproom and viral laugh all at once.
