This is the issue where COVID-19 arrives in earnest. “Old Glory Helping Hands” captured the pivot: what had been business as usual pre-COVID changed as scarcity set in after the nation's first reported death from the virus, and the local distillery turned its capacity toward helping — part of a wave of businesses retooling to meet the moment.
The publisher's message, running alongside the “Comfort Food” feature, was unusually candid. “Dear friends,” it began, before acknowledging that the issue the publisher had expected to introduce had been overtaken by events. The Pet Corner addressed a fear circulating at the time, after news that a dog in China had tested a “weak positive” for the coronavirus, while “Making the Most of Family Time” met the new reality of households suddenly home together, arguing that because each child is different, parents should have different plans for each.
The recurring departments carry on in the background, but the issue's value is documentary: it preserves the exact moment a community absorbed a shock — a distillery making sanitizer, a publisher speaking plainly, and families improvising a life indoors, a snapshot of Clarksville at the edge of the unknown.
“Old Glory Helping Hands” documented the exact moment the pandemic changed everything. The scarcity set in after the nation's first reported COVID-19 death in late February, as people began panic-shopping and hoarding sanitizer and prices skyrocketed. Once the distillery's plan to make its own went viral, requests poured in from across the country — chiefly from first responders and emergency personnel — and Old Glory began working out a distribution plan to prioritize medical facilities, first responders and community-service organizations.
