The feature made the practical case for a program with outsized impact: early access to books shapes a child's readiness to learn, and the Imagination Library places them in the hands of kids who might otherwise go without — a small investment with lifelong returns, worth protecting through a hard year. The recurring Pet Corner leaned into the season with National Pit Bull Awareness, working to counter stubborn stereotypes about a widely misunderstood breed.
The recurring departments round out an advocacy-minded October number that puts the magazine's pages to work on behalf of its youngest and most vulnerable readers — a community protecting what it treasures, from the children a book program reaches to the misunderstood dogs waiting for a fair chance.
The Imagination Library rescue had an unlikely hero. When ten-year-old Mikey McAdaragh heard that COVID-19 had knocked a hole in Imagination Library Montgomery County's fundraising — and that young readers might not receive their books in November and December — he didn't hesitate to act. Karen Morrow, co-chair of the program's local board, put the problem plainly: “We've run into a bit of a deficit with our funding.” The feature's rallying cry was simple: a beloved program that mails free books to children needed the community's push to keep going.
