“Take It To Heart” made a timely argument: it's easy to let COVID-19 overshadow other important health issues when the virus dominates every conversation, but heart health cannot wait. The feature refocused readers on the screenings and habits that matter most for the leading cause of death, pandemic or not.

With a romantic night out still complicated, “Date Night: Inside Edition” reimagined the evening at home, from virtual mixology classes to other creative at-home experiences. “Partners in Wine” profiled Jake and Emily Trageser, whom the military brought back to Clarksville in 2013, and the business they built together. The issue also spoke directly to exhausted families with a “Parent Survival Guide for Remote Learning” — for many, January 2021 seemed to go on forever thanks to virtual schooling for all CMCSS students.

The recurring departments round out a portrait of a community adapting: cardiologists urging people not to let COVID crowd out their heart health, couples finding romance without a reservation, a military family building a business at home, and parents inventing new routines for a school year lived on screens.

“Take It To Heart” acknowledged how easily the pandemic could overshadow everything else — the virus dominated the news, social media and every conversation, and had changed how everyone lived. But researchers were spotting one hopeful trend: people were becoming more conscious of self-care. Whether it's a walk for fresh air, a book to get lost in, or a new hobby, the feature noted, taking care of yourself reduces anxiety and improves mental health — a small silver lining that also happened to protect the heart the American Heart Month issue was built around.
