The cover feature profiled artist Ricky Cavaness, who said he had been painting for about twenty years but doodling and drawing since he was a little kid. Readers may have already seen one of his latest works — a mural, “Last Train to Clarksville,” that nods to the city's musical and rail history and its place in the popular imagination.
A new business took shape on Dover Road, where Amanda Martin and Deana Mills — longtime coworkers — were launching The Coffee House, describing how the project came together when the property's owners were looking for the right tenant. The Clarksville Area Chamber of Commerce held its January Business After Hours at Holiday Inn Clarksville Northeast, one of the regular networking events that keeps the local business community connected through the winter.
The recurring departments round out an early-spring number that celebrates the people making and remaking Clarksville — from a downtown mural to a new coffee house.
The “Last Train to Clarksville” mural adorns a support structure under the pedestrian bridge crossing Commerce Street, depicting a train — marked 0831-1968 — bursting through the wall. At the unveiling, attended by dozens of officials and local supporters of art and history, Cavaness hung painted rocks in front of the image to give it a three-dimensional effect, turning what had been a bare pedestal into a draw for downtown.
