Tennessee State Fire MarshalNashville, TN – The importance of smoke alarms has never been greater in the survivability of a house fire. Most fire fatalities are caused by smoke inhalation, not by burns.

As the toxicity and speed of smoke increases, the Tennessee State Fire Marshal’s Office (SFMO) is sharing tips on how you can keep your family safe from the toxic smoke and fumes produced by a home fire.

When a fire grows inside a building, it will deplete most of the available oxygen which slows the burning process.

Tennessee State Fire Marshal states Most Home Fire Deaths Caused by Smoke, Not Flames

 

Tennessee State Fire MarshalNashville, TN – Home is the place people feel safest from fire, but it’s actually the place they’re at greatest risk. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), approximately 80 percent of all U.S. fire deaths occur in the home. Most home fire fatalities, however, are not caused by burns, but by smoke inhalation.

To help prevent these tragedies, the Tennessee State Fire Marshal’s Office (SFMO) is reminding residents that the early detection capabilities of a working smoke alarm can mean the difference between life and death.

Specialized Tennessee National Guard Unit aids Maryville Residents

 

Tennessee National GuardNashville, TN – The Tennessee National Guard’s 45th Civil Support Team (WMD) was ready early last Thursday morning to answer the call made by the Blount County Fire Department through TEMA. When a sheared axle punctured a CSX rail car carrying hazardous material it sparked a fire filling the air with hydrogen cyanide, a poisonous gas, in and around the city of Maryville.

As many as 5000 citizens were evacuated from their homes due to unsafe air and potentially contaminated well water. The 45th deployed 11 personnel and equipment to assist local fire, EPA, and CSX officials with air monitoring of the evacuated area from Thursday to Saturday conducting 24 hour operations during that time.

NASA’s Cassini spacecraft discovers Methane Ice Cloud in Stratosphere of Saturn’s moon Titan

NASA - National Aeronautics and Space AdministrationPasadena, CA – NASA scientists have identified an unexpected high-altitude methane ice cloud on Saturn’s moon Titan that is similar to exotic clouds found far above Earth’s poles.

This lofty cloud, imaged by NASA’s Cassini spacecraft, was part of the winter cap of condensation over Titan’s north pole. Now, eight years after spotting this mysterious bit of atmospheric fluff, researchers have determined that it contains methane ice, which produces a much denser cloud than the ethane ice previously identified there.

NASA’s Cassini Spacecraft finds giant Cloud circling south pole of Saturn’s moon Titan

NASA - National Aeronautics and Space AdministrationPasadena, CA – Scientists analyzing data from NASA’s Cassini mission have discovered that a giant, toxic cloud is hovering over the south pole of Saturn’s largest moon, Titan, after the atmosphere there cooled dramatically.

The scientists found that this giant polar vortex contains frozen particles of the toxic compound hydrogen cyanide, or HCN.

“The discovery suggests that the atmosphere of Titan’s southern hemisphere is cooling much faster than we expected,” said Remco de Kok of Leiden Observatory and SRON Netherlands Institute for Space Research, lead author of the study published today in the journal Nature.

NASA’s Cassini spacecraft sees Ice Clouds forming in atmosphere of Saturn’s moon Titan

NASA - National Aeronautics and Space AdministrationPasadena, CA – An ice cloud taking shape over Titan’s south pole is the latest sign that the change of seasons is setting off a cascade of radical changes in the atmosphere of Saturn’s largest moon.

Made from an unknown ice, this type of cloud has long hung over Titan’s north pole, where it is now fading, according to observations made by the composite infrared spectrometer (CIRS) on NASA’s Cassini spacecraft.
