Instant Peay Play: APSU Volleyball Govs surging as start of OVC schedule looms

 

Instant Peay Play - APSU SportsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s volleyball team should be riding a swell of confidence this week, as they prepare for the beginning of the Ohio Valley Conference part of their schedule this coming weekend, after winning The Citadel Bulldog Invitational.

The Governors went 4-0 at the invitational – winning 12 of 13 sets played overall — picking up wins over The Citadel, Charleston Southern, Elon and Savannah State.

It is the best in-season tournament finish for APSU since the Govs took second place at the University of Tennessee Invitational – with a 3-1 mark — back on September 18th-20th, 2014.

Lady Govs open home slate with OVC-openers against Murray State and UT Martin

After a highly successful season-opening road swing, Austin Peay State University’s volleyball team opens its home and Ohio Valley Conference schedules with a pair of weekend contests. The Lady Govs host long-time rival Murray State in a 7:00pm, Friday contest before UT Martin visits for a 2:00pm, Saturday match. Both contests will be played at the Dunn Center and admission is free to all fans.

Austin Peay completed its 10-match road swing with an impressive 9-1 record. The Lady Govs finished second at both the Mississippi State Maroon Classic and the IUPUI Hampton Inn Invitational before winning the East Tennessee Buccaneer Classic, last weekend.

Sophomore Nikki Doyle and junior Ilyanna Hernandez paced the Lady Govs offense through the season’s opening 10 matches. Doyle leads the OVC with 3.60 kills per set while Hernandez is third among conference hitters with 3.31 kills per set. However, the offense has remained balanced with the team’s five starting hitters each recording a 10-plus kill outing this season. In addition, senior Taylor Skinner leads the league with a .350 attack percentage while junior Kayla Grantham is fourth with a .292 attack percentage.

Lady Govs wrap up road swing at East Tennessee

Austin Peay State University GovernorsAustin Peay State University’s volleyball team ends its season-opening 10-match road swing when it competes in the Buccaneer Classic hosted by East Tennessee, Friday and Saturday.

Austin Peay (6-1) opens the tournament against host East Tennessee (4-3) in a 7:00pm, Friday contest. The Lady Govs then will meet UNC Asheville (4-3) at 9:00am, Saturday, before concluding its stay with a 4:30pm match against UNC Greensboro (7-1).

The Lady Govs will take a five-match win streak into this weekend’s contests after winning all three matches at the IUPUI Hampton Inn Invitational last weekend. Austin Peay has finished second in its first two tournaments this season, posting a 3-1 record at the Mississippi State Maroon Classic over the season’s opening weekend.

Hernandez picks up Week 2 Athlete of the Week Award

 

Austin Peay State University GovernorsJunior outside hitter Ilyanna Hernandez, of the Austin Peay State University women’s volleyball team, has been named the Copies In a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week.

Ilyanna HernandezHernandez was named the Ohio Valley Conference’s “Player of the Week” after leading the Lady Govs with 46 kills (4.18 kills per set) en route to all-tournament honors at the IUPUI Hampton Inn Invitational, last weekend.

She also led the team with seven service aces and chipped in defensively with 32 digs (2.91 digs per set).

Hernandez recorded 16 kills against both Wright State and DePaul before posting 14 kills against IUPUI.

Lady Govs volleyball cages Panthers in IUPUI Invitational finale

 

Austin Peay State University GovernorsAustin Peay State University’s volleyball team closed its stay at the IUPUI Hampton Inn Invitational with a dominating three-set sweep (25-16, 25-22, 25-9) of host IUPUI, Sunday afternoon at IUPUI Gymnasium.

Austin Peay (6-1) went undefeated at the tournament after winning a pair of four-set decisions, Saturday. The win also extended the Lady Govs win streak to five matches.

The Lady Govs trailed only early in the first set of Sunday’s finale, but used five consecutive points to turn a 7-5 deficit into a 10-7 lead and they would not trail again in the match.

Lady Govs volleyball wins both Saturday matches at IUPUI Invitational

Austin Peay State University GovernorsJunior outside hitter Ilyanna Hernandez had 16 kills in both matches to lead Austin Peay State University’s volleyball team to a pair of victories, Saturday, at the IUPUI Hampton Inn Invitational at IUPUI Gymnasium. The Lady Govs defeated Wright State, 3-1 (25-20, 21-25, 25-17, 30-28) in the opener followed by a 3-1 (25-23, 25-16, 20-25, 25-18) victory against DePaul in the day’s second match.

Hernandez led the Lady Govs with 16 kills with a .213 attack percentage against Wright State, but added five service aces, 15 digs and three blocks to her performance. She followed that with a second 16-kill outing against DePaul, improving to a .250 attack percentage while also recording a service ace, seven digs and two blocks.

“Ilyanna came ready to play today,” said Lady Govs head coach Haley Janicek. “She demanded the ball on offense and did a lot of good things. She never lost her composure and was very consistent.”

Lady Govs close opening weekend with two Saturday victories

 

Austin Peay State University GovernorsStarkville, MS – Austin Peay State University’s volleyball team wrapped up its stay with a pair of victories, Saturday, at the Mississippi State Maroon Classic. The Lady Govs defeated Arkansas-Little Rock, 3-2 (21-25, 25-15, 25-20, 23-25, 15-8), in the morning’s contest before posting a three-set sweep (25-22, 25-12, 25-17) of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the nightcap.

Austin Peay (3-1) used a balanced scoring attack in the day’s first contest against UALR, with four players reaching double-digit kill territory. Sophomore outside hitter Nikki Doyle led all hitters with 19 kills, senior middle blocker Taylor Skinner and junior outside hitter Ilyanna Hernandez each added 15 kills and junior outside hitter Kayla Grantham chipped in 10 kills.
