Austin Peay Governors Football to scrimmage first time Monday morning

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – After two days in full pads, Austin Peay State University football team will conduct its first scrimmage, 9:30am, Monday, in Governors Stadium.

The Governors are expected to run some 80 plays Monday morning as head coach Rick Christophel and staff attempts to evaluate a veteran but still young Governors football team. The Governors are coming off a pair of spirited days of full pad work, Friday and Saturday—the Govs conducted a non-padded kicking practice on Sunday.

37 APSU student-athletes conferred degrees Friday

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – A record 1,075 graduate were awarded degree at Austin Peay State University’s 83rd Spring Commencement and 37 were student-athletes.

They were part of graduation ceremonies in the Dunn Center as both a morning and afternoon commencements were held Friday.

The seniors athletes were part of a graduating class that saw record numbers earn Athletics Directors Honor Roll recognition and a department grade-point average that approach 3.0 annually.

Austin Peay Governors Football’s Red-White game set for Thursday

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s football team will culminate spring practice 7:00pm, Thursday, with the Red-White Spring game, in Governors Stadium.

The 69 players were selected through a draft after Tuesday’s practice. Head coach Rick Christophel divided up his 14 seniors and then placed them in charge of the draft.

Austin Peay Football Governor Barker to play for South team in FCS Scout Senior Bowl

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – James Barker has spent much of this weekend at Myrtle Beach, although he is not there to enjoy those sandy beaches.

Instead Barker, Austin Peay State University football’s senior 6-4, 305-pound offensive tackle, will be suiting up to play football one more time when he plays for the South Team, 1:00pm, (CT), Saturday, in the FCS Senior Scout Bowl, to be played at Doug Shaw Stadium in Myrtle Beach, SC.

Austin Peay Governors Football at Tennessee Tech

Austin Peay State University GovernorsCookeville, TN – In its season finale, Austin Peay’s football team still has something to play for – the coveted Sgt. York Trophy.

The Govs remain in contention for the in-state trophy, needing a win against Tennessee Tech, 1:00pm, Saturday, in order to bring the trophy to Clarksville for the first time.

The Golden Eagles, meanwhile, are in a similar situation. Heading into the final regular-season weekend,  Tennessee Tech is on the verge of their first Ohio Valley Conference football championship since 1975.

It marked the last home performance for eight Govs’ seniors: safety Amius Smith, running back Ryan White, wide receiver Scott Thomas, offensive lineman Devon McVea, offensive tackle James Barker, offensive tackle J.P. Washington, center Tim Schmid and long snapper Nick Newsome. After owning a school-record 26 seniors in 2009, the Govs had half that many (13) in 2010.

It marks the last home performance for eight Govs’ seniors: safety Amius Smith, running back Ryan White, wide receiver Scott Thomas, offensive lineman Devon McVea, offensive tackle James Barker, offensive tackle James Washington, center Tim Schmid and long snapper Nick Newsome.

The 19-10 loss to Eastern Illinois was APSU’s fourth straight loss. Austin Peay is amidst its fourth straight season in which it has lost three or more games.

Austin Peay Governors vs. Jacksonville State

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – When Austin Peay defeated Tennessee State, 37-34, it allowed the Govs to open 2-0 in the OVC for the first time since 1977.

When APSU rallied from being down 27-6 to be at Tennessee State, October 1st, that 21-point deficit was the largest overcome by the Governors in school history. The previous largest deficit was 17 points, October 28th, 1978, when the Governors rallied from a 17-0 deficit to defeat Middle Tennessee, 28-17.

After owning a school-record 26 seniors in 2009, the Govs had half that many (13) in 2010. This season the Govs have even fewer, eight.
