Holt, Harris earn Legends Awards; Doyle, Terry named Most Outstanding Athletes

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Two senior athletes who authored record-setting careers have been named the 2010-11 Legends Award recipients.

And two underclass athletes who led their respective programs into the postseason have been named Most Outstanding Athletes. The recipients of Austin Peay State University’s most cherished athletic awards along with the individual team honors were made Monday night at APSU’s annual Athletics banquet, held in Dave Aaron Arena.

Loo’s match downs Murray State at OVC Tennis Tournament

Austin Peay State University GovernorsPaducah, KY – Freshman Kimberly Loo had to grind out a three-set win at No. 4 singles in order for Austin Peay State University women’s tennis team to defeat Murray State, 4-3, in first-round Ohio Valley Conference Tournament action.

It was a match both teams had played just 10 days earlier, in Murray, KY, ending in the same result. Ten days ago it was sophomore Carolin Weikard winning the deciding match at No. 2 singles. This time, the decider fell in the hands of a freshman and Loo pulled through.

OVC Tennis Tourney has Lady Govs seeded fourth

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University women’s tennis team will begin its Ohio Valley Conference Tournament title defense as the No. 4 seed with a 10:00am, Friday match against No. 5 Murray State at the Larry J. Heflin Tennis Center, in Paducah, KY.

With a win, the Lady Govs would advance to play regular-season champion Jacksonville State in a 10:00am, Saturday match. No. 3 Eastern Kentucky and No. 6 Morehead State also play in first-round action, Friday, with the winner advancing to play No. 2 UT Martin.

Lady Govs Tennis hosts JSU for Senior Day

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay women’s tennis closes the regular-season with a 1:30pm, Friday, match against Jacksonville State. Prior to the match, the Lady Govs will recognize Brittany Hays, the program’s only senior.

The Lady Govs have won back-to-back OVC matches, against Eastern Illinois and at Murray State. Sophomore Carolin Weikard has played especially well as of late, winning four of her last five matches at No. 2 singles. Along with junior Vanja Tomic, who dropped her first-ever OVC match against UT Martin, the Lady Govs have been strong at the top.

Tomic, Lady Govs Tennis fall to UT Martin

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University women’s tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision to UT Martin, Thursday, in Ohio Valley Conference action at the Austin Peay Tennis Courts.

The Lady Govs lost an emotionally exhausting doubles match at No. 2, allowing the Skyhawks to win the point. This was after sophomore Carolin Weikard and freshman Kimberly Loo made quick work of UTM’s Jodie Tiley and Anna Marie Herbold at No. 1. Junior Vanja Tomic and freshman Andra Cornea, followed with a 9-7 loss at No. 2.

Big East Louisville next for Lady Govs Tennis

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University women’s tennis team steps out of Ohio Valley Conference play for a 5:00pm, Friday match at Big East member Louisville.

The Lady Govs are looking to overcome their own demons in the form of a five-match non-conference road losing streak, dating back to a February 12th loss at Xavier. Also included are losses to Miami (Ohio), Southern Illinois, South Alabama and BYU Hawaii – all quality teams that have downed the defending OVC Champions.

Strong singles give Lady Govs tennis OVC win at Morehead State

Austin Peay State University GovernorsMorehead, KY – Austin Peay State University women’s tennis team closed out the weekend with a 5-2 Ohio Valley Conference win at Morehead State, Saturday.

The win snapped a four-match skid for the Lady Govs, despite losing the doubles point for the third consecutive match. Austin Peay won all five singles matches to outlast the Eagles for the win.

Lady Govs tennis drops close OVC match at EKU

Austin Peay State University GovernorsRichmond, KY – Austin Peay State University women’s tennis team fell 4-3 at Eastern Kentucky, Friday, in the first match of their Kentucky road swing.

The Lady Govs fall to 5-7 overall with a 2-1 OVC record, while Eastern Kentucky improved to 8-7 overall and 1-0 in OVC play. It was a rematch of the 2010 OVC Tournament championship game, however, in that matchup, the Lady Govs edged out the Colonels.

OVC tennis continues for Lady Govs with Kentucky swing

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Ohio Valley Conference play continues for Austin Peay State University women’s tennis team when its the road for a pair of league matches this weekend, beginning with a 10:00am, Friday match at Eastern Kentucky, followed by a 10:00am, Saturday match at Morehead State.

As the defending OVC champions, the pressure is on the Lady Govs, especially with returning OVC Player of the Year Vanja Tomic and Freshman of the Year Carolin Weikard holding down the top two spots. However, injuries have taken their toll on the Lady Govs, leaving the team without a No. 6 player and no No. 3 doubles team.

Lady Govs tennis swept by Seasiders

Austin Peay State University GovernorsPensacola, FL – Austin Peay State University women’s tennis team were shutout by BYU Hawaii, 4-0, Saturday.

The Lady Govs wrapped their spring break trip by facing off against the No.3-ranked Division II Seasiders, a team that entered the match with a perfect 12-0 record. Austin Peay dropped the four singles matches and no doubles were played.
