Austin Peay State University GovernorsCookeville, TN – In its season finale, Austin Peay’s football team still has something to play for – the coveted Sgt. York Trophy.

The Govs remain in contention for the in-state trophy, needing a win against Tennessee Tech, 1:00pm, Saturday, in order to bring the trophy to Clarksville for the first time.

The Golden Eagles, meanwhile, are in a similar situation. Heading into the final regular-season weekend,  Tennessee Tech is on the verge of their first Ohio Valley Conference football championship since 1975.

It marked the last home performance for eight Govs’ seniors: safety Amius Smith, running back Ryan White, wide receiver Scott Thomas, offensive lineman Devon McVea, offensive tackle James Barker, offensive tackle J.P. Washington, center Tim Schmid and long snapper Nick Newsome. After owning a school-record 26 seniors in 2009, the Govs had half that many (13) in 2010.

White Named CIAF Athlete of the Week

Austin Peay State UniversityRyan WhiteClarksville, TN – Ryan White, a senior on the Austin Peay State University football team, has been named the Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week.

The Nashville native, rushed for 146 yards on 20 carries and two touchdowns in the Governors shutout victory, Saturday, against Central State.

On Senior Day the senior running back wasted little time in collecting his 14th career 100-yard rushing performance as he broke the 100-yard mark with over five minutes to play in the second quarter. «Read the rest of this article»

Govs gain first shutout since 2003 in downing Marauders, 40-0

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Ryan White rushed for 146 yards and two touchdowns while Tee Howell returned a third-quarter punt 65 yards for a score as Austin Peay State University defeated Central State, 40-0, Saturday in non-conference football action at Governors Stadium.

The victory snapped a Governors four-game losing streak and improved them to 3-6 on the season. Central State, an independent Division II team from Wilberforce, Ohio, fell to 1-9 on the season.

Govs come up short in second half as Redhawks rally for win

Austin Peay State University GovernorsCape Girardeau, MO – Running back Renard Celestin ran 22 yards for a touchdown, turning an Austin Peay State University turnover into a third-quarter go-ahead score, as Southeast Missouri defeated the Governors, 17-13, Saturday in Ohio Valley Conference action in Houck Stadium.

The loss extended Austin  Peay’s losing streak to three games and dropped the Govs to 2-5 overall and 2-3 in the OVC. Meanwhile, Southeast Missouri, meanwhile, improved to 2-5 overall and 2-3 in conference play.

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – This is Austin Peay’s 39th Ohio Valley Conference season. The Govs are 93-171-2 alltime in OVC play, including 9-29 in OVC openers. The Govs won their OVC opener a year ago, 26-23, against Tennessee State.

After owning a school-record 26 seniors in 2009, the Govs had half that many (13) in 2010. This season the Govs have even fewer, eight.

Austin Peay last won a football game, 26-23, against Tennessee State, September 18th. They enter the contest amidst a 10-game losing streak.

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – This is Austin Peay’s 75th season of college football, including nine non-scholarship seasons (1997-2005). They enter the contest with a 271-468-16 record.

Austin Peay has enjoyed only 18 winning seasons in 74 years of football and only two winning seasons since the turn of the century–a 7-5 mark in 2002 as a non-scholarship program and a 7-4 record in 2007 in Rick Christophel’s first season.

After owning a school-record 26 seniors in 2009, the Govs had half that many (13) in 2010. This season the Govs have even fewer, eight.

Austin Peay State University GovernorsCincinnati, OH – This is Austin Peay’s 75th season of college football, including nine non-scholarship seasons (1997-2005). They enter the season with a 271-467-16 record.

Austin Peay is 27-45-2 in openers in its previous 74 years of football, including last season’s 38-6 home victory against Cumberland. The Govs have won the season opener five times in the last 16 seasons.

This is the third time Austin Peay has opened the season with Cincinnati, the previous two being in 1985 and 1993.

Governors Football show improvement in shortened second scrimmage

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Ryan White and Jake Ryan showed they are close to being ready for the 2011 football season to start.

Meanwhile, the defense finally got those much-sought turnovers in Austin Peay State University’s Saturday morning 71-play scrimmage.

On just his second carry against the second-team defense, White ran 42 yards for a touchdown. The preseason All-Ohio Valley Conference selection finished with 54 carries on four carries.

Ryan, meanwhile, completed four passes of 10 yards or more, including a 20-yard scoring toss to Tee Howell.

Stansell getting his kicks for Governors

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – In two seasons Stephen Stansell literally has booted himself up the Austin Peay kicking records chart.

Stansell has kicked 21 field goals in his two seasons, tying him for third all time in career field goals made (Tom McMillan holds the career mark with 33 field goals from 1986-89). The junior from Athens also is tied for career field-goal percentage (63.6 percent).
