The ride begins on Saturday, October 16 with an arrival in San Diego on Friday, October 22nd, 2010. Participants have the option of riding a final stage on the 56-mile bike course used for the San Diego Triathlon Challenge on Sunday, October 24th. The Million Dollar Challenge riders will play a memorable role in that day’s “celebration of abilities.”

Participation includes a fully supported ride, including hotel accommodations for seven nights, daily breakfast, lunch and dinner, tour leaders, sag wagons, mechanical support, first aid, massage, and bike transport from Southern California to San Francisco prior to the start of the ride. Each rider will be outfitted daily with MDC-branded cycling apparel and have the opportunity to take part in a 20-week training program, including group rides in San Diego, indoor cycling classes and a customized training manual.

The money raised for the Million Dollar Challenge will help towards the payment of handcycles, racing chairs, sports chairs and sports prosthetics for challenged athletes, as well as help subsidize their competition and training expenses.

About Gilbert Magallanes

Gilbert Magallanes
Gilbert Magallanes

Gilbert served as an Army Green Beret in both the 1991 Gulf War and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. On December 1, 2005 Gilbert was injured when a 2000 pound bomb was mistakenly dropped on his position while he was guarding the President of Afghanistan.

Giblert’s injuries resulted in a partial loss of his skull, permanent brain damage, vision loss in his left eye, and loss of fingers on his left hand.

Gilbert endured multiple surgeries and spent more than a year in the hospital recovering from his wounds. He initially believed that his injuries would prevent him from pursuing his dream of becoming a competitive archer.

However, in June 2008, Gilbert began to see that he was still able to compete regardless of the severity of his injuries. With the support of his family, Gilbert began once again to pursue his passion for archery and also started to take up other sports such as javelin and triathlon.Gilbert has since won a gold medal in javelin at the State Games of the West.

About Chris Self

Chris Self
Chris Self

Master Sergeant Chris Self is a 22 year U.S. Army veteran. In December 2005, while serving in Iraq, Chris sustained gunshot wounds to both legs during a combat operation. One bullet severed the
sciatic nerve in his right leg leaving it paralyzed.

Prior to his injury, Chris was extremely active. He competed in triathlons, cycling events, and ran in numerous marathons. He was especially active with his three children who love to play and hang out with their dad.

Chris was determined not to let his injury slow him down. With his wife Dana by his side, Chris made the decision to have his paralyzed right leg amputated. On July 13, 2006, seven months after he was
wounded, Chris endured a successful surgery to remove his right leg.

With the help of CAF Operation Rebound and his own determination, Chris is now back to the active lifestyle he had known prior to his injury. Chris’ resilience and positive attitude highlight what he and other injured troops are capable of doing when given the opportunity.
