Man on 13 Years Community Corrections Charged with Robbery

Clarksville Police DepartmentClarksville, TN – On January 26th, 2011, around 2:55pm, officers responded to the Lincoln Drive area for a shots fired called.  When officers arrived they found a that 42 year old man had been assaulted by multiple individuals and also had shots fired at him. The men had fled the scene before officers arrived. 

Officers combed the area, but did not locate any of the suspects. The victim was transported to the hospital for the injuries inflicted during the robbery; he was treated and released. Additionally, the victim’s vehicle had been hit in the rear passenger fender by a bullet.

The victim told Detective Ulrey that he was giving an old acquaintance, later identified as John Richard Cunningham, a ride to Lincoln Homes when Cunningham displayed a handgun and demanded his vehicle. The victim pulled into a parking lot where he was instructed to go, at which time, he attempted to grab his keys and run away.

Cunningham struck the victim in the head with a pistol. At that point, another unknown man appeared and began striking the 42 year old man in the head with what the victim believed to be a stick or pipe. While the victim was on the ground, Cunningham took the car keys and fled the scene.

Through his investigation, Detective Ulrey was able to identify Cunningham as the man that was given a ride,  displayed the handgun, had hit the victim in the head, and took his keys.

On February 1st, 2011, John Richard Cunningham was booked into the Montgomery County Jail.

At the time of the robbery, John Richard Cunningham was on community corrections. He was placed on Community Corrections, September 15th, 2009, for 13 years for charges stemming from Possession For Resale (Cocaine), Simple Possession, and Evading.    

The investigation is ongoing and Police are working to identify other suspects involved in the robbery. Detective Ulrey is the lead investigator or contact the TIPSLINE, 931-645-8477.
