Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University men and women’s cross country teams came blazing out of the gate to begin the 2015 season at the Brooks Memphis Twilight Classic, late Saturday evening at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex.

The men’s team had an extraordinary evening as Martin Rejman broke the school record for the men’s four mile run (20:44.42). Rejman placed 21st out of 258 total runners, many of whom ran for high-level, competitive SEC teams such as Alabama, Mississippi State and Arkansas State.

Head coach Doug Molnar was highly impressed by the performance of his men’s team.

“It’s always great when you break a school record,” Molnar said. “It’s always great when you can run with these teams that are on this level.”

Wesley Gray also had an impressive performance, placing 57th (21:21.01) in his first official race as a freshman.

“It was a solid race for Wesley…he could probably pass more than 100 guys in the future once he trains a bit more,” Molnar said.

The Lady Govs had several good races as well. Rebecca Wheeler placed 77th (19:42.76) out of 249 runners, and Unjula Lester and Molly Jordan came in close behind at 99th (20:19.89) and 100th place (20:20.15) , respectively. Returning team MVP Jessica Gray came in at 108th (20:29.71).

Molnar also was pleased with the women’s side.

“Wheeler is really beginning to step into a leadership role as a sophomore,” Molnar said. “Molly, Unjula and Gray seem to be gearing up to do some pack running throughout the year and will probably wind up being their modus operandi.”

The Govs and the Lady Govs head next to Chattanooga to face off in the Powerade Invitational on Friday, September 11th.
