APSU Softball hosts Wabash Valley, Friday

APSU SoftballClarksville, TN – The Austin Peay State University (APSU) softball team will look to remain undefeated in fall play, 3:00pm, Friday afternoon, October 4th at Cathi Maynard Park-Cheryl Holt Field, as the Governors host Wabash Valley College for a doubleheader.

The Governors look to continue their momentum after sweeping Trevecca back on September 21st in facing a Warriors squad, from Mount Carmel, IL, that won 44 games last year and claimed the Great Rivers Athletic Conference title for the fourth straight season.

“We’re excited to once again be able to be here at Cathi Maynard Park and play in front of our fans “coach Kassie Stanfill said. “We know we’re facing a quality team that is going to come in here ready to compete against us, so we’ve spent the last week or so cleaning up some things — working on fundamentals — and hopefully that shows up on Friday.

“The big thing we’re trying to stay away from is the big inning. In both games versus Trevecca we gave up a big inning. We’ve been working with the pitchers with getting ahead in counts, how do we get ahead and how we finish the batter. Defense wise, just cleaning it up, making the routine plays and just shutting the door with two outs and finally offensively overall just being more aggressive at the plate.”

The Governors had eight different players record at least two hits each in their sweep of Trevecca two weeks ago led by senior Kelsey Gross and sophomore Lexi Osowski who collected four hits each, while freshman Kendyl Weinzapfel had three hits in the twinbill.

Other highlights in the Govs sweep of Trevecca was junior Bailey Shorter recording two doubles, Weinzapfel a triple, Gross driving in five runs and freshman Shelby Harpe’s walk-off two-run homer in Game 1 of the doubleheader.

In the circle, Harpe and sophomore Harley Mullins picked up wins versus Trevecca – both coming in relief – while Gross led all Govs pitchers with five strikeouts.
