Founder and publisher Carla Lavergne opened the magazine with a warm welcome and a simple promise: a free monthly, full of local content, made for and about the families of Clarksville. That practical, service-minded tone is set from the first page. “May We Suggest: Feeding Frenzy” gathered clever gear to make family mealtimes easier, from a Good Bites crustless sandwich cutter to other kid-friendly finds, while “Ways to Trim the Fat from Your Food Bills” shared seven shopping habits — go alone and after you've eaten to dodge impulse buys, keep a list, and grow a little basil, dill, thyme or chives to pinch from instead of buying.
A technology piece caught the community right at the dawn of the digital-camera age, marveling that a genuinely good camera could now be had for under $200 — and a serviceable one for less — putting daily, high-resolution family snapshots within reach of everyone from teenagers to soccer moms. It reads now as a snapshot of a technology just becoming universal.
The calendar pointed families toward a busy spring: the Nora Witzel statue unveiling at the Montgomery County Courthouse on Third Street, the International Streetfest on Franklin Street in front of Trinity Church, and story time at Busy Bee's Children's Library, with bright picture books, songs and finger plays. “Balance-Beam Parenting” and a “Dad's Pad” feature filled out the family coverage.
Seen today, the debut is a real piece of local history — the opening chapter of a magazine that would document Clarksville life for years. Lavergne's founding idea is fully present here, and the blend of useful advice, hometown flavor and warmth on these pages is exactly what carried the publication forward.
