The cover health feature took on hip and knee replacement, a major decision for many older readers, walking through what the surgery involves and the return to mobility it can offer.

“A Country Girl Can Survive: Rural Retreats” celebrated the getaways within reach of Clarksville, profiling a host whose every detail — from the coffee-table books on display to custom candles made in a guest's honor — is inspired by the people she welcomes. “Making Waves: Watercolor Exhibit at the Customs House” explored why artists and art lovers alike are drawn to the immediacy and unpredictability of watercolor, a tough medium to master but deeply rewarding. “The HCG Diet Revolution,” by Christina Chittenden, examined a weight-loss approach drawing attention at the time, and a harrowing health feature followed a man named Dan and his family through a roller coaster of emotions when his very life was in danger — and, months later, his recovery.

The recurring departments round out a July number that balances a serious medical subject, a restorative escape and the pleasures of art — the operating room, the guest cottage and the gallery wall, quietly insisting that a good summer has room for all three.

Woven through the July issue was the story of musician Emmanuel Méjeun, whose devotion the feature let speak for itself: “Everything about my story is tied to music: it's my passion; it's my love; it's going to be my job — it's everything to me.” Around him the issue ranged from the “HCG Diet Revolution” to a “Keeping Your Cool in Extreme Heat” guide for the season's worst stretch, balancing a serious look at joint replacement with the restorative pleasures of a rural retreat and a watercolor exhibit.
