“Keeping Our Children Safe” led the issue with a clear-eyed look at the places children slip out of sight — in crowded places, in the front yard, and other spots a parent's attention can miss — offering the kind of specific, practical vigilance that turns good intentions into real protection.
“It's the 4th of July, Chester” brought the recurring chipmunk into the Independence Day spirit, giving younger readers their own way into the holiday, while “The Benefits of a Healthy Breakfast” reminded busy summer families not to skip the meal that sets up the whole day. “Beauty Begins from Within” connected inner health to outer glow, and “Dollars & Sense” continued the practical financial guidance readers relied on.
The recurring departments round out a July number that takes the protection of children seriously while still delighting in the pleasures of a summer holiday — the vital and the fun together, with room for the fireworks, the picnics and the simple joys of an American summer.
The Riverfest coverage had fun with the Regatta, in which paddlers race home-made boats built from cardboard and duct tape 100 yards down the Cumberland from the McGregor Park boat ramp — scheduled that year for Saturday, September 12. Event director Kevin Cowling expected a record turnout after the race grew from 18 teams in 2007 to 26 in 2008, calling the build-it-from-scratch-and-keep-it-afloat challenge a great way to build camaraderie.
