“Chickens in Your Own Backyard” led the issue with a practical, of-the-moment guide to backyard poultry, tapping into the growing local interest in raising your own eggs and connecting with where food comes from.

“RescueVets: Saving Two Lives” told a moving story about the program pairing rescued animals with veterans — a partnership that heals both the animal and the person, resonant in a Fort Campbell community. “Self Confidence in Kids” offered parents guidance on nurturing resilient, self-assured children. The health pages closed out the year with practical advice: “Five End-of-Year Tips From Your Pharmacist” and “Five Tips for Staying Well When the Family's Sick,” plus a feature on reversing the signs of facial aging.

The recurring departments round out an October number centered on homegrown living and healing — a flock, a bond and a child, each about nurturing something, celebrating the small acts of care that make a house a home and a community whole.

The backyard-chickens cover feature was a small comedy of expectations. A self-described city girl who knew chickens only as something to cook, the writer stepped into a coop of six — Nellie, Hazel, Buffy, Lacey, Pepper and Ella — braced for a noisy, smelly mess pecking at her sandal-clad feet. Instead she found something closer to a little girl's overgrown dollhouse, and came away pleasantly surprised by the calm, curious birds and the tidy world they kept.
