The Candlelight Ball 2017 spotlighted Austin Peay's 33rd annual gala honoring the university's most generous supporters — an elegant black-tie tradition that turns philanthropy into celebration.

Fittingly for American Heart Month, the issue took women's cardiac health seriously. “Heart Attack Signs Women Can't Afford to Ignore” and “Heart Emotions and Heart Disease” addressed the ways heart attacks present differently in women — potentially life-saving information delivered without alarm — while “Talk About Your Vagina” continued the issue's candid approach to women's health. On the finance side, “Money is the Number One Cause of Divorce” examined the strain finances put on relationships, finding a bright spot in the numbers: the divorce rate had fallen to a 40-year low. “More Than the Minimum” offered a practical guide to paying off credit-card debt.

The recurring departments round out a February number at its most usefully candid — the heart-attack symptoms women overlook, the money stresses that strain a marriage, and the health topics too often left unspoken, all delivered with warmth and directness.

The divorce feature opened with rare good news: the national divorce rate had fallen to a 40-year low, and Tennessee's own ranking had dropped from the tenth-highest in 2015 to nineteenth among the states. Money, though, remained one of the leading causes — largely because couples won't talk about it. An American Express study found 91 percent of couples avoid money conversations with their partner, and the National Foundation for Credit Counseling reported that 68 percent of engaged couples brought negative attitudes about finances into the marriage.
