The issue covered the unveiling of a Tennessee Historical Marker honoring Howard White “Smiley” Johnson on Madison Street, where dozens gathered to mark the occasion. Thomas Murff shared Johnson's story at the unveiling — orphaned at the age of ten, Johnson went on to a life worth a permanent marker.
The Leadership Clarksville Class of 2025 gathered at The Haven Pointe, April Consulo's new event venue, for a kickoff hosted by graduates of the Class of 2024 — a look at the program that develops the city's civic leaders and a new local venue at once. The Veteran Business of the Month was Clarksville's Titan T Center, opened by Staff Sergeant Trey Robertson and his wife Brandy, a board-certified family nurse practitioner — a husband-and-wife team pairing military service and medical expertise.
The recurring departments round out a November number that captures a city honoring its past while building its future — from a historical marker to a leadership class to a veteran-owned clinic.
Thomas Murff filled in the life behind the marker. Orphaned at ten, Howard White “Smiley” Johnson landed at the Odd Fellows Orphanage in Clarksville and grew into a gifted athlete — a linebacker and guard at Clarksville High School from 1933 to 1936, a University of Georgia player from 1937 to 1939, and then a walk-on free agent with the Green Bay Packers in 1940 — a life, as the unveiling made clear, worth a permanent place on Madison Street.
