APSU Women's TennisBrentwood, TN – Senior Lidia Yanes Garcia, of the Austin Peay State University (APSU) women’s tennis team, has been accorded one of six Ohio Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete Awards for the 2018-19 academic year.

Hailing from Los Realejos, Spain, Yanes Garcia has established herself as the one of the most dominant tennis players in OVC history.

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University athletics annual end-of-the-year awards banquet got a bit of an upgrade this year.

The First ESPEAY Awards were awarded Thursday night in the APSU Dunn Center, with Tearra Banks, Dre Gleason, Alex Robles and Kaylnn Pitts emerging with some of the evening’s top prizes.

Lidia Yanes Garcia named Outstanding Female Athlete, Track’s Breigh Jones chosen Female Legends

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsClarksville, TNChris Horton, who punctuated a consummate basketball career with Ohio Valley Conference tournament most valuable player honors, has been chosen as both Austin Peay State University’s 2015-16 Outstanding Male Athlete as well as the Legends Award recipient as the most valuable male senior athlete.

Meanwhile, Lidia Yanes Garcia, who became the first women’s tennis player in OVC history to be named Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year in the same season, was named APSU’s Outstanding Female Athlete.

Austin Peay Track and Field star Carrie Burggraf to be inducted to APSU Hall of Fame

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Probably no one has exemplified the term student-athlete more in Austin Peay State University athletics history than Carrie Burggraf. Few have accomplished as much as Burggraf did as a track and field performer—she was a five-time OVC pole vault champion—and no one achieved what she did outside the field of competition.

And with all those accomplishments also has come induction into the APSU Athletics Hall of Fame, 9:00am, Saturday, in the Dunn Center’s front lobby.

Austin Peay to induct volleyball great Stephanie Champine into APSU Athletics Hall of Fame Saturday

 

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsClarksville, TN – She was simply known as “Champ.” Never was a nickname more appropriate and never did one person do more to help transform a struggling program into a conference contender.

Jenny Hazelwood was seeking players who could impact her program for the 2008 season. After watching the Lady Govs struggle to an 8-25 record during her first APSU season, the Lady Govs coach knew she needed an influx of talent. Hazelwood had some pieces in place but knew the rebuilding process also needed a mix of young talent and a veteran who could provide an offensive jolt.

Jada Stotts, Breigh Jones, Tennis standouts big winners at APSU Athletic Awards Banquet

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Two Austin Peay State University tennis players who brought renown to the University on the courts and in the classroom have been accorded some of the athletic department’s highest male honors, while a stand-out track and field student athlete and a do-it-all volleyball player won the honors on the women’s side at Monday night’s annual APSU Athletics Awards Banquet in the Dunn Center.

Senior Dimitar Ristovski, who parlayed his fourth consecutive All-OVC honor for Austin Peay men’s tennis into a spirited run to the OVC Championship match, took home APSU’s Most Outstanding Male Athlete honor.

Sean Bailey, Vanja Tomic, Greg Bachman earn Austin Peay highest Athletics Honors

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – For the first time since Austin Peay State University established the awards nearly two decades ago, the Most Outstanding Male and Female Athletes have come from the sport of tennis.

Junior Sean Bailey, who recently was named Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year in leading the Govs to the No. 2 seed in the OVC tournament, and Vanja Tomic, a three-time first-team All-OVC selection who owned an 19-6 record at No. 1 singles this year, have been named the 2011-12 Most Outstanding APSU Athletes.
