Brothers decorated for combat in Afghanistan

Regional Command East - Combined Joint Task Force - 101Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan – Two brothers in the 101st Airborne Division were decorated for two separate combat actions during their deployment to Afghanistan.

One received a Silver Star Medal in December for actions during a five-day fire fight in Kunar Province. The other received a Purple Heart in January after a fire fight at Forward Operating Base Andar.

U.S. Army Cpl. Joshua Busch, 3rd platoon, Company D, 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, was on a mission in November when his platoon was attacked by insurgents.

Task Force Iron Rakkasan radio connects GIRoA to people in Miri

187th Infantry Regiment - Iron RakkasansFort Campbell KY, 101st Airborne DivisionGhazni Province, Afghanistan – The Afghan government and 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, are expanding their reach with a second Radio in a Box station at the Miri District Center in Andar Province.

The new station was recently established in the district subgovernor’s building.

Within days of the first broadcasts, Sher Khan, Andar District subgovernor, conducted a live interview addressing the people’s primary concerns and making them aware that he is doing all he can to help the local people. «Read the rest of this article»

Task Force Iron selects Soldier, NCO of the Year

Fort Campbell KY, 101st Airborne Division187th Infantry Regiment - Iron RakkasansGhazni Province, Afghanistan – Soldiers and noncommissioned officers with 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team took part in an annual NCO and Soldier of the Year competition January 4th-5th at Forward Operating Base Andar.

“This is really a great honor,” said U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Britt Cantrell from Walker, LA, with Company A, 3rd Bn. 187th Inf. “I was proud to represent A Company in this competition, and now I have the opportunity to represent the Battalion. I’m grateful to all of the NCOs and officers who motivated me throughout my career.”

Task Force Iron eliminates insurgent IED team

187th Infantry Regiment - Iron RakkasansFort Campbell KY, 101st Airborne DivisionGhazni Province, Afghanistan – Soldiers form Task Force Iron Rakkasan and members of the Afghan Uniformed police, using the Precision Threat Detection System blimp at Forward Operating Base Andar, identified a group of insurgents with weapons and explosives January 3rd.

Soldiers of 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, first identified four insurgents acting in a suspicious manner at a road intersection.

As the insurgents began to move, TF Iron Rakkasan took quick actions to prevent the insurgents from emplacing an improvised explosive device and escaping. A combination of hellfire missiles and 30 mm machine gun fire killed one insurgent and drove the second one to seek refuge in a nearby qalat.  «Read the rest of this article»

Awards ceremony marks start of Task Force Iron’s road home

Fort Campbell KY, 101st Airborne Division187th Infantry Regiment - Iron RakkasansGhazni Province, Afghanistan – The first Soldiers of 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, will be heading home soon after spending the last 11 months in eastern Afghanistan.

Task Force Iron held a ceremony to award the departing Soldiers with their end of tour awards. Five Bronze Stars and 21 Army Commendation Medals were awarded at the ceremony.

Soldiers who arrived early in Afghanistan, such as company executive officers and supply sergeants, are the first to redeploy home and set the conditions for the rest of the battalion.

Abu Co. recons new battle space in eastern Ghazni

BastogneFort Campbell KY, 101st Airborne DivisionGhazni Province, Afghanistan – Soldiers from Company A, 1st Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, were added to Task Force Rakkasan to help secure eastern Ghazni for the remainder of their deployment in eastern Afghanistan. 

Three days after Co. A arrived to Forward Operating Base Andar, they packed up their trucks again and headed out on their first operation December 17th and 18th.

Fort Campbell KY, 101st Airborne Division187th Infantry Regiment - Iron RakkasansGhazni Province, Afghanistan – Thousands of miles from Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, the Soldiers of Task Force Iron Rakkasan had just one thing on their minds; Army football.

TF Iron Rakkasan filled the conference room at Forward Operating Base Andar with West Point alumni and fellow supporters of the Army football team December 12th as the Army attempted to break an 8-year losing streak against Navy. This is the 111th meeting between the teams.

Iron Rakkasans operate in insurgent haven to find, remove threats

187th Infantry Regiment - Iron RakkasansFort Campbell KY, 101st Airborne DivisionGhazni Province, Afghanistan – Task Force Iron Rakkasan conducted Operation Blade III in eastern Ghazni Province December 5th.

Soldiers of 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, have conducted several operations in the Brimzi area over the past couple of weeks and Blade III was an extension of those missions.

The missions have come from combined U.S. and Afghan National Security Forces. Blade III had the help of a remote piloted vehicle and Forward Operating Base Andar’s Precision Threat Detection System to find the enemy.

“Our presence in the Brimzi area today created a lot of enemy activity,” said U.S. Army 2nd Lt. Christopher Farmer from Lancaster, PA, 3rd Bn., 187th Inf., operations assistant officer. “Our assets allowed us to follow the insurgents as they attempted to maneuver and what we learned will help focus future operations.” «Read the rest of this article»

Iron Rakkasans enjoy Thanksgiving in Afghanistan

Fort Campbell KY, 101st Airborne Division187th Infantry Regiment - Iron RakkasansGhazni Province, Afghanistan – Task Force Iron Rakkasan celebrated Thanksgiving 2010 in Ghazni Province, Afghanistan. Even thousands of miles from home, the Soldiers had many reasons to be thankful.

“We’ve completed nine months of our deployment and we have had a lot of success,” said U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Joshua Isbell from Sylacauga, AL, a squad leader in 2nd Platoon, Company A, 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division. “The battalion has made a lot of progress at pushing the insurgents out of Ghazni while preparing the Afghan National Security Forces to take up the task on their own.”

Task Force Iron runs Turkey Trot in Afghanistan, Fort Campbell

Fort Campbell KY, 101st Airborne Division187th Infantry Regiment - Iron RakkasansGhazni Province, Afghanistan – Soldiers of Task Force Iron Rakkasans conducted the first leg of the 5 km “Turkey Trot” on Forward Operating Base Andar in Ghazni Province November 20th.

Family members and rear-detachment Soldiers from 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment at Fort Campbell, KY, conducted their segment of the run 12 hours later in a show of solidarity with the deployed Rakkasans, said U.S. Army Capt. Michael Naas from Dayton, Ohio, Headquarters Company, 3rd Bn., 187th Inf. Regt. commander.
