Austin Peay State University Governors Football loses 49-12 at Mercer

Austin Peay State University Governors - APSUMacon, GA – Austin Peay State University’s football team could not overcome a 28-0 first-quarter deficit and fell to Mercer, 49-21, Saturday, in a non-conference football game played at Mercer University Stadium.

The loss dropped APSU to 0-6 on the season while Mercer improved to 5-2. The Governors losing streak now stands at 18 games.

Former APSU Football Coach Bill Schmitz Dies

 

Austin Peay State University Governors Sports - APSUTampa, FL – Former Austin Peay State University coach Bill Schmitz has died at the age of 59. His death was confirmed Monday following an apparent suicide jump from the Sunshine Skyway Bridge in Tampa.

A longtime coach, Schmitz had a lengthy coaching resume that included stops at Cincinnati, Rice, Vanderbilt and Eastern Michigan before getting his first head coaching job with the United States Coast Guard Academy.

APSU Fans to vote on All-Time Governors Stadium Football Team

 

APSU - Austin Peay State University SportsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University will be “retiring” Governors Stadium, or at least as it is currently configured, at 2013 season’s conclusion when the wrecking balls begin collapsing the home side of the 67-year-old facility to make way for a new construction, including suites, for the 2014 season.

To celebrate such retirement, Austin Peay’s athletics department will honor the venerable facility by naming an All-Time Governors Stadium team.

Austin Peay Governors Football host Tennessee Tech in last game of the season

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University football team hopes to end the season on a high note when it hosts Tennessee Tech in an 11:00am, Saturday contest at Governors Stadium.

The Govs won their last home game – a 56-0 spanking of Culver-Stockton – and look to make it two in a row in Clarksville. Saturday also represents Austin Peay’s last chance to earn an Ohio Valley Conference victory in 2012.

Cheryl Holt, Jay Bailey, Ashley Haynes were inducted into Austin Peay Athletics Hall of Fame Saturday morning

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Two athletics greats and longtime athletics coach and administrator were inducted into the Austin Peay State University Athletics Hall of Fame, Saturday morning.

Jay Bailey, an All-American running back who owns the school single-season rushing record; Ashley Haynes, the versatile forward who scored 1,000 points and grabbed 1,000 rebounds in her illustrious career, and Cheryl Holt, who led Austin Peay volleyball to 19 straight Ohio Valley Conference tournament appearances, including the 1991 tourney title, were enshrined as the 98th, 99th and 100th University Athletics Hall of Fame members.

The 9:00am, induction ceremonies in the Dunn Center’s front lobby will see the APSU Athletic Hall of Fame grow to 107. The newest inductees and their families also will be honored during halftime ceremonies of APSU men’s basketball home contest against UT Martin.

Austin Peay State University Athletics Hall of Fame tickets remain on sale

 

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Tickets for the 35th Annual Austin Peay State University Athletics Hall of Fame Breakfast still are available in the APSU athletic office.

Tickets are $10.00 for the Hall of Fame breakfast, slated for 9:00am, Saturday, in the Dunn Center’s front lobby. With a large crowd expected, reservations will be accepted through noon, Friday by calling Tara Pfeifler, 931.221.6119.

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Two former star athletes and a legendary coach/administrator will be inducted into the Austin Peay State University Athletics Hall of Fame, Saturday, January 28th.

Jay Bailey, an All-America running back during the Governors’ non-scholarship era, and Ashley Haynes, the only player in Lady Govs’ basketball history to score 1,000 points and grab 1,000 rebounds, are the two athletes to be honored while Cheryl Holt, the longtime volleyball coach who also has served in numerous capacities at Austin Peay, also will be inducted in the 9:00am breakfast ceremonies.

The induction ceremonies will see the APSU Athletics Hall of Fame grow to 100. The newest inductees and their families also will be honored during halftime ceremonies of APSU’s home contest against UT Martin.
