187th Infantry Regiment - Iron RakkasansFort Campbell KY, 101st Airborne DivisionGhazni Province, Afghanistan – The Afghan government and 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, are expanding their reach with a second Radio in a Box station at the Miri District Center in Andar Province.

The new station was recently established in the district subgovernor’s building.

Within days of the first broadcasts, Sher Khan, Andar District subgovernor, conducted a live interview addressing the people’s primary concerns and making them aware that he is doing all he can to help the local people. «Read the rest of this article»

Task Force Iron selects Soldier, NCO of the Year

Fort Campbell KY, 101st Airborne Division187th Infantry Regiment - Iron RakkasansGhazni Province, Afghanistan – Soldiers and noncommissioned officers with 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team took part in an annual NCO and Soldier of the Year competition January 4th-5th at Forward Operating Base Andar.

“This is really a great honor,” said U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Britt Cantrell from Walker, LA, with Company A, 3rd Bn. 187th Inf. “I was proud to represent A Company in this competition, and now I have the opportunity to represent the Battalion. I’m grateful to all of the NCOs and officers who motivated me throughout my career.”

Task Force Iron eliminates insurgent IED team

187th Infantry Regiment - Iron RakkasansFort Campbell KY, 101st Airborne DivisionGhazni Province, Afghanistan – Soldiers form Task Force Iron Rakkasan and members of the Afghan Uniformed police, using the Precision Threat Detection System blimp at Forward Operating Base Andar, identified a group of insurgents with weapons and explosives January 3rd.

Soldiers of 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, first identified four insurgents acting in a suspicious manner at a road intersection.

As the insurgents began to move, TF Iron Rakkasan took quick actions to prevent the insurgents from emplacing an improvised explosive device and escaping. A combination of hellfire missiles and 30 mm machine gun fire killed one insurgent and drove the second one to seek refuge in a nearby qalat.  «Read the rest of this article»

Task Force White Eagle, Task Force Iron Rakkasan eliminate insurgents

Fort Campbell KY, 101st Airborne Division187th Infantry Regiment - Iron RakkasansGhazni Province, Afghanistan – Soldiers with Company C, 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division conducted a combined operation with Polish Battle Group A in Bashir Village, Andar District, in eastern Ghazni Province to cordon and search an insurgent safehaven December 30th.

Polish and U.S. forces and local Afghan Uniformed Police worked together to find four caches of bomb-making materials, a military chest rack, three AK-47s and two hand grenades. They also detained three insurgents.

Awards ceremony marks start of Task Force Iron’s road home

Fort Campbell KY, 101st Airborne Division187th Infantry Regiment - Iron RakkasansGhazni Province, Afghanistan – The first Soldiers of 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, will be heading home soon after spending the last 11 months in eastern Afghanistan.

Task Force Iron held a ceremony to award the departing Soldiers with their end of tour awards. Five Bronze Stars and 21 Army Commendation Medals were awarded at the ceremony.

Soldiers who arrived early in Afghanistan, such as company executive officers and supply sergeants, are the first to redeploy home and set the conditions for the rest of the battalion.

Abu Co. recons new battle space in eastern Ghazni

BastogneFort Campbell KY, 101st Airborne DivisionGhazni Province, Afghanistan – Soldiers from Company A, 1st Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, were added to Task Force Rakkasan to help secure eastern Ghazni for the remainder of their deployment in eastern Afghanistan. 

Three days after Co. A arrived to Forward Operating Base Andar, they packed up their trucks again and headed out on their first operation December 17th and 18th.

Task Force Iron Rakkasan uses PTDS to prevent highway robbery

BastogneFort Campbell KY, 101st Airborne DivisionGhazni Province, Afghanistan – Recently, Soldiers from Task Force Iron Rakkasan watched a member of the Afghan Uniformed Police conduct an illegal checkpoint on the route between Ghazni and Sharana. Using the camera system on the Persistent Threat Detection System, Soldiers observed a man standing in the road collecting money from vehicles. The practice is common by insurgents who fund their attacks by taking money from locals.

187th Infantry Regiment - Iron RakkasansFort Campbell KY, 101st Airborne DivisionGhazni Province, Afghanistan – Village elders gathered at Forward Operating Base Bande Sardeh to sign a pact pledging to keep insurgents out of their villages and report insurgent activity to security forces in eastern Andar District December 21st.

Afghans taking more responsibility for security is the first step for establishing lasting security in the area, said Abdul Wahab, an agent for the Afghan National Directorate of Security.

Twenty-seven village elders gathered Dec. 21st at Forward Operating Base Bande Sardeh in eastern Andar District to discuss an agreement to keep the Taliban out of their villages. Task Force Iron Rakkasan conducts officer exchange with Polish Battle Group

Fort Campbell KY, 101st Airborne Division187th Infantry Regiment - Iron RakkasansGhazni Province, Afghanistan – For the past four months, Soldiers with 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, worked for Task Force White Eagle in eastern Ghazni Province.

In order to improve coordination and share counterinsurgency and combat tactics, techniques and procedures, 3rd Bn., 187th Inf. Regt. sent four officers to spend five days embedded with Polish Battle Group Alpha.

NDS, Task Force Iron Rakkasans seize weapons in Andar district

187th Infantry Regiment - Iron RakkasansFort Campbell KY, 101st Airborne DivisionGhazni Province, Afghanistan – Soldiers of Company B, 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment conducted a search operation in Shaf Khel Village in Andar District, Ghazni Province, December 12th.

They found 11 weapons after four hours of searching, as well as magazines and ammunition, including three AK-47s, 10 AK-47 magazines, hundreds of rounds, two Russian assault rifles, a Russian light machine gun, two rifles and a pistol.

Information regarding the location of the illegal weapons came from National Directorate of Security interviews of the villagers. «Read the rest of this article»
