Austin Peay Governors Football’s Devin Stark leads talented receiving corps

APSU Sports: Austin Peay Football

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – On the surface it seems Devin Stark’s abilities at wide receiver are more appreciated on the national and regional levels than they are within his own conference.

Stark recently was named preseason second-team All-American by the FCS Senior Bowl. Earlier this summer, Stark was named to the College Football Performance Watch List at wide receiver as well. However, Stark’s name was not on either the 2011 All-Ohio Valley Conference team or the league’s 2012 preseason team.

APSU Sports: Men’s Football

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s football team is now in full pre-game mode as it prepares to open the 2011 season.

After the Governors final scrimmage, last Saturday, the Governors have shifted their focus to preparing for Cincinnati, APSU’s opponent for the 6:00pm, Saturday, September 3rd, season opener in Nippert Stadium.

“We have started to implement our (game) plans,” APSU coach Rick Christophel said. “We are going to see what we can and can’t do against them. They are well-coached and Coach (Butch) Jones went through a transition period last year. One thing for sure—they are a good football team.

APSU Sports: Men’s Football

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – With a week-full of practices behind it, Austin Peay State University’s football team will scrimmage for the first time, 9:00am, Monday, in Governors Stadium.

The scrimmage will be a culmination of seven practices days, including full pads both Friday and Saturday. The Governors coaching staff backed off contact work Sunday in preparation for Monday’s question-answering scrimmage.

The young Governors are coming off a 2-9 2011 record, but return 46 letterwinners, including seven starters on offense and nine on defense. After watching his team’s intense work in the offseason and the first practice week, head coach Rick Christophel is anxious to see not only how his returnees have progressed but how much he can count on his young players as well.

Stark reality is Govs have little experience beyond veteran pair of wide receivers

APSU Sports: Men’s Football

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – When Devin Stark stepped onto the football field for his first college game at Illinois State in Week 3 of 2009, he had little more than a week of practice after an NCAA Clearinghouse issue finally was cleared up.

“At one point in that game, I remember looking at (wide receiver) Coach (Marcus) Gildersleeve and saying ‘he really doesn’t know what he is doing out, does he?’ It was unfair we had to put him in that situation, but we had injury and other issues and we were forced to play him. He has come so far since then.”

APSU Men’s Football

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Filling areas of need, Austin Peay State University football team announced the signing of 16 student-athletes to National Letters of Intent, Wednesday, to attend the University next fall.

Wednesday was the first day that potential recruits could sign national letters of intent.

“We recruited needs as we always do,” APSU coach Rick Christophel said. “We pinpointed some areas, in particular, and we felt like we did well recruiting those areas. We still would like to find a linebacker and another offensive lineman—we signed one (Julian Virgo, of Pope John Paul II in Hendersonville), but we really feel good about this recruiting class so far.
