About Stella Bertz Cheer For A Cure®

Cheer For A Cure® was established in 2005 on behalf of Stella Bertz who lost an 18 month battle with lung cancer.  She was a non-smoker, avid jogger, and beloved cheerleading and softball coach for over ten years.  As her daughters entered college, Stella continued coaching and mentoring high school girls, teaching them not just “cheers” but the virtue of what it really means to be a leader.

At her funeral on a cold February day many of these cheerleaders, in dedication to her, said goodbye by performing her favorite cheer.  Her daughter Maria assumed her responsibility as the cheerleading coach and it became her hope to continue Stella’s spirit of leadership and giving.  The school and community embraced the idea of hosting a competition and raising money for cancer research… and Cheer For A Cure began.

Cheer For A Cure has since grown into a national, community-based 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to raising funds in an effort to impact the lives of those who have been touched by cancer.  Our programs promote youth leadership and athletics while raising spirits and funds in the battle against cancer.

Over the years, we have become the nation’s largest grassroots network of cheerleaders, student athletes, coaches, and fans striving to raise awareness, prevent cancer, and save lives with events being being held all over the United States.

We are inspired by the enthusiastic and ambitious spirit cheerleaders share. It is our goal to harness the spirit and power of the cheerleading community and direct it into an opportunity to truly make a difference. Through our fun and exciting events, the youth in our communities have the rare opportunity to lead in the fight to end cancer.

Thanks to events like the Cheer for a Cure® Championships, Pigskin Challenge™, and generous contributions from our partners, sponsors, fans and supporters, we are continuing to grow and make a difference.

We’re not just cheer-leaders, but community leaders. Thank you for helping us cheer and lead for a cure.
