Clarksville, TN – The countdown to the 2016 Austin Peay State University volleyball team season opener began Friday when head coach Taylor Mott revealed the dates for the program’s fall schedule.
In 142 days, the Governors volleyball team will open the season, August 26th-27th, in Johnson City, TN when it competes at East Tennessee’s tournament alongside Troy, USC Upstate and host East Tennessee.Austin Peay’s home opener lies just 146 days away when it hosts Western Kentucky, a 2015 NCAA Tournament participant, August 30th at the Dunn Center.
APSU will face a NCAA tournament participant in each of its next two weekends.
The Trojan Invitational, September 2nd-3rd, will feature New Mexico State, which went undefeated in the Western Athletic Conference last season, along with host Troy, Southern and Valparaiso. The next weekend Atlantic 10 champion Dayton awaits at the Dunn Hospitality Tournament hosted by Evansville and including Kent State.
Austin Peay returns home for another midweek outing, September 13th, when it hosts Saint Louis. It will be first meeting between the two teams since 2003 and the first time since 1990 the Billikens will visit Clarksville. The Governors then conclude their pre-Ohio Valley Conference slate at The Citadel, September 16th-17th, where they will join Savannah State, Elon and Charleston Southern.
The 16-match OVC race begins at the Dunn Center in 2016 when Austin Peay hosts Southeast Missouri, September 23rd, followed by UT Martin, September 24th. The road portion of the league slate begins with a September 27th contest at defending regular-season champion Murray State.
That match against Murray State begins a four-match conference road trip and is followed by matches at Eastern Kentucky, Eastern Illinois and SIU Edwardsville. Austin Peay returns home for its only two home OVC matches in October against Jacksonville State and Tennessee Tech, October 14th-15th.
One of two mid-OVC nonconference tilts awaits October 19th when the Governors travel to Middle Tennessee. That weekend APSU travels to Belmont, the defending OVC tournament champion, and Tennessee State. Austin Peay then hosts Alabama A&M in its final nonconference test, October 25th at the Dunn Center.
October concludes with a road swing to Southeast Missouri and UT Martin. But November will see Austin Peay in an enviable position with four home matches awaiting a potential push into the postseason. The Govs will host Murray State (November 2nd), Morehead State (November 5th), Eastern Illinois (November 11th) and conclude the regular-season slate, November 12th against SIUE.
Austin Peay’s 2016 schedule released Friday includes only the dates of competition for the upcoming season. Those dates and the times for those contests will likely change as the season nears.
