Sapphire, NC – The script was flipped for Austin Peay State University men’s golf in the first round of the Hummingbird Intercollegiate at the Country Club of Sapphire Valley, with a pair of Governors slotted into the lower part of the lineup coming up big.

The day was not as kind for the other three Governors in the lineup. Senior Erik Hedberg (79) is tied for 44th, with sophomore Sean Butscher (81; t-49) and junior Justin Arens (82; t-55) not too far behind him.
“I think the stats show that outside of Lancaster, we didn’t hit the ball well at all today,” said head coach Robbie Wilson. “Even Hunter missed a lot of shots but he made the most of it thanks to a really good short game. Tomorrow, we want to hit more greens, be patient and end the fall on a good round.”
Host Western Carolina (278) leads the tournament, followed by Eastern Kentucky (290), Elon (292), High Points (292), Brevard (294) and South Carolina Beaufort (300) in the top five; the Govs are three shots outside the top-five thanks to an opening-round 303.
Freshman Alex Vegh equaled Hedberg with an opening-round 79 as an individual; meanwhile, freshman Michael Busse (80, t-41) and sophomore Sam Lopez (83, t-57) opened their stint as individuals at the Trevecca Men’s Invitational.
Action from Sapphire Valley begins 10:25am (ET), with the Governors going off Hole No. 10, paired with Cardinal Stritch and Southern Wesleyan.
