The cover feature, “Take a Deep, Clean Breath,” marked a public-health milestone: on October 1st, Tennessee took a major step with its statewide restaurant smoking ban — a change with real, everyday consequences for families eating out, and exactly the sort of civic development the magazine tracked for readers.

For Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the issue ran timely, potentially life-saving coverage, joining the national push to encourage screening and awareness during the month set aside for it.

“Reducing Risks of SIDS” gave new and expecting parents crucial guidance on protecting their infants — careful, important health writing for the magazine's young families.

“Halloween Fun” and a Coloring feature brought seasonal delight for the kids, and the issue turned its lens on the community's youngest members — a whole wall of children, age two and up — in the kind of reader-photo feature that has always given the magazine its personal, hometown feel.

The recurring departments finish out an October number that balanced a landmark public-health change, women's health, infant safety and the fun of the season — a wide-ranging issue that took its role as a community resource seriously even in the magazine's first year.
