Austin Peay State University Lady Govs - APSUKnoxville, TN – An error-prone outing proved costly as Austin Peay State University’s volleyball team fell in three sets (14-25, 22-25, 18-25) to host Tennessee at the Comcast Lady Vol Classic, Thursday night at Thompson-Boling Arena.

37 APSU student-athletes conferred degrees Friday

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – A record 1,075 graduate were awarded degree at Austin Peay State University’s 83rd Spring Commencement and 37 were student-athletes.

They were part of graduation ceremonies in the Dunn Center as both a morning and afternoon commencements were held Friday.

The seniors athletes were part of a graduating class that saw record numbers earn Athletics Directors Honor Roll recognition and a department grade-point average that approach 3.0 annually.

Austin Peay State University Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s volleyball team closes out the home portion of its 2011 schedule with a pair of Ohio Valley Conference contests this weekend. First, the Lady Govs will host Tennessee Tech, 7:00pm, Friday before a 1:00pm, Homecoming Saturday contest against Jacksonville State. Prior to the start of Friday’s contest Austin Peay will recognize four seniors: Marie Mullins, Paige Economos, Kayla Grantham, and Illyanna Hernandez.

Skinner leads Lady Govs volleyball past UT Martin

Austin Peay State University GovernorsMartin, TN – Senior Taylor Skinner had eight kills and eight blocks to lead Austin Peay State University’s volleyball team in a three-set Ohio Valley Conference victory (25-23, 28-26, 25-15) against UT Martin, Friday night at Skyhawk Fieldhouse.

Austin Peay (17-5, 8-3 OVC) led 11-4 in the opening set after three service aces by junior Marie Mullins and a pair of Skyhawks attack errors capped a 7-0 run. But UTM battled back with a 7-1 run of its own to get within one point, 13-12. But a kill by freshman Alex Sain stopped the rally and gave APSU a two-point advantage it would nurse to the 25-23 set win.

Lady Govs volleyball falls into Colonels trap

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Fresh off its victory against the league-leader, Austin Peay State University’s volleyball team was unable to maintain its momentum, falling 3-1 (26-28, 19-25, 25-21, 22-25) to Eastern Kentucky, Saturday, in Ohio Valley Conference action at the Dunn Center.

Austin Peay (16-5, 7-3 OVC) battled an inconsistent offense early on and lost the match’s first two sets. The Lady Govs committed 10 attack errors in the opening set, but managed to stave off set point five times as they rallied back from a 24-20 deficit to take a 26-25 lead. But Eastern Kentucky blocked consecutive APSU attacks to take a 27-26 lead and then Austin Peay committed another attack error to hand the set to EKU, 28-26.

Lady Govs victorious in home and OVC opener

Austin Peay State University GovernorsSophomore Nikki Doyle recorded a career-high 23 kills to lead Austin Peay State University women’s volleyball team to a 3-1 (27-25, 25-13, 23-25, 25-22) Ohio Valley Conference victory against Murray State, Friday night, at the Dunn Center.

Nikki Doyle ( Courtesy: Austin Peay Sports Information )Austin Peay (10-1, 1-0 OVC), which won its 10th consecutive match, won its home and conference opener courtesy a 67-kill performance – two shy of the team’s season high – and a .241 attack percentage.

The first set was a combination of scoring runs by each team. Austin Peay (10-1, 1-0 OVC) opened with a 7-3 run as Doyle recorded three kills and senior Jessica Mollman added two kills. Murray State answered with a 10-6 run sparked by three Ashley Nenninger kills. The Racers later used a 9-3 run to build a 22-18 advantage as five different hitters recorded a kill during the burst.  Austin Peay fought back, using consecutive kills by junior Ilyanna Hernandez to force a 23-23 tie. After trading points to get to 25-25, the Lady Govs got consecutive kills from Hernandez and Mollman to seal the set, 27-25. «Read the rest of this article»

Lady Govs volleyball wins both Saturday matches at IUPUI Invitational

Austin Peay State University GovernorsJunior outside hitter Ilyanna Hernandez had 16 kills in both matches to lead Austin Peay State University’s volleyball team to a pair of victories, Saturday, at the IUPUI Hampton Inn Invitational at IUPUI Gymnasium. The Lady Govs defeated Wright State, 3-1 (25-20, 21-25, 25-17, 30-28) in the opener followed by a 3-1 (25-23, 25-16, 20-25, 25-18) victory against DePaul in the day’s second match.

Hernandez led the Lady Govs with 16 kills with a .213 attack percentage against Wright State, but added five service aces, 15 digs and three blocks to her performance. She followed that with a second 16-kill outing against DePaul, improving to a .250 attack percentage while also recording a service ace, seven digs and two blocks.

“Ilyanna came ready to play today,” said Lady Govs head coach Haley Janicek. “She demanded the ball on offense and did a lot of good things. She never lost her composure and was very consistent.”

Lady Govs Volleyball picked sixth in preseason poll

 

Lady Govs Vollyball report to campus this weekend

Austin Peay State University GovernorsOhio Valley Conference coaches and sports information directors have picked Austin Peay State University’s volleyball team to finish sixth in the preseason poll released by the conference office, Wednesday.

Morehead State was picked to win the 2010 OVC race, receiving 153 points and getting 11 of the 20 first-place votes. Jacksonville State, the defending regular-season and tournament champion, was picked to finish second after receiving 139 points and the remaining nine first-place votes.

Murray State (133 points), Eastern Kentucky (105) and Tennessee Tech (99) also were picked to finish ahead of the Lady Govs.

Austin Peay received 93 points to receive the sixth-place nod, the final spot in the season-ending OVC Volleyball Championship. It was followed by Southeast Missouri (65 points), Eastern Illinois (41), Tennessee State (39) and UT Martin (33).
