Established in 1991, the NCAA Woman of the Year award recognizes graduating female college athletes who have exhausted their eligibility and distinguished themselves in academics, athletics, service and leadership throughout their collegiate careers.

Instant Peay Play: APSU Women’s Tennis off to a Quick Start

 

Instant Peay Play - APSU SportsClarksville, TN – After seeing an Ohio Valley Conference championship and a trip to the NCAA Tournament coming up one-win short last April, the Austin Peay State University (APSU) women’s tennis team got off to a quick start to their 2019 season this past weekend in hopes of putting last season’s heartbreaking loss in the OVC finals behind them and get over the final hurdle and a berth into the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2010.

APSU Lady Govs Tennis opens spring season with a pair of road matches

APSU Women's TennisClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University (APSU) women’s tennis team begins its quest for an Ohio Valley Conference championship with two road matches, the first against Middle Tennessee, 10:00am, Saturday before taking on Chattanooga, 1:00pm, Sunday.

The Governors fell in a heartbreaker in last season’s OVC title match against Eastern Kentucky, but with the EKU tennis program ceasing to exist, the Govs should be amongst the favorites.

APSU Tennis’ Lidia Yanes Garcia receives OVC Scholar-Athlete Award

APSU Women's TennisBrentwood, TN – Senior Lidia Yanes Garcia, of the Austin Peay State University (APSU) women’s tennis team, has been accorded one of six Ohio Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete Awards for the 2018-19 academic year.

Hailing from Los Realejos, Spain, Yanes Garcia has established herself as the one of the most dominant tennis players in OVC history.

Former APSU Women’s Basketball star Tearra Banks signs Contract to play in Turkey

Slan Sports ManagementToronto, Canada – Slan Sports Management is pleased to announce that form Austin Peay State University (APSU) Women’s Basketball star Tearra Banks has signed a one-year contract with Istanbulgucu of the Turkish Türkiye Kadınlar Basketbol Ligi (TKBL) for the 2018-2019 season.

Banks, a 6’3’’ center, had a strong first professional season with Beroe Star Zagora in the Women’s Adriatic Basketball Association (WABA) in 2017-2018. She averaged 18.9 points and 11.1 rebounds per game while shooting an efficient 53.4% from the field.

Banks was named MVP of the WABA Group Stage and was selected to the Eurobasket.com All-WABA Second Team.

APSU Women's VolleyballClarksville, TN – The Austin Peay State University (APSU) volleyball program had been trending upward for several seasons under the direction of head coach Taylor Mott, transforming into a perennial contender with a deep well of talent to draw from.  

But from the moment the Govs toppled 19th-ranked Missouri in an epic five-setter in the season’s third match, even the most casual observer could see the 2017 campaign was going to be special.

2017-18 Top-10 — No. 4: APSU has an abundance of OVC honors

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Usually in Austin Peay State  University’s yearly top-10 countdown, APSU takes special care to identify each individual who was named Ohio Valley Conference Coach, Player, Freshman or other comparable “Of the Year” honor for their respective sport, because that’s a big deal and needs to be recognized as such.

But, well… there were too many this year, so they all get to go here.

Between coaches and players, 14 members of the Austin Peay extended family earned one of the top honors for their respective sport in 2017-18, including five Freshman of the Year honors.

If we’re lucky, APSU might get a dozen or so chances in a given year to take down a top-25 foe.

The 2017-18 year saw a trio of Governor squads topple a team considered to be among the nation’s best.

APSU Women’s Tennis’ Lidia Yanes Garcia picks up a spot in latest ITA rankings

APSU Women's TennisClarksville, TN – Rising APSU senior Lidia Yanes Garcia has been named the 15th-ranked player in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association Ohio Valley Regional rankings, released Monday night.

The three-time reigning Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year is the first player during the Ross Brown era to earn a regional ranking from collegiate tennis’ governing body, and may be the first in Austin Peay State University history.

Former APSU Basketball coach Dave Loos selected for OVC Hall of Fame induction

APSU Men's BasketballBrentwood, TN – Longtime Austin Peay State University men’s basketball head coach and athletics director Dave Loos has been elected to the Ohio Valley Conference Hall of Fame and will be officially inducted at the annual OVC Honors Brunch, Friday, June 1st, 2018 at the DoubleTree Hotel in downtown Nashville.

The Ohio Valley Conference Hall of Fame was organized in 1977 with the intent of honoring the coaches, administrators, faculty and staff that have been associated with the OVC for at least five years and provided extensive and outstanding service to the Conference.
