Lady Govs lose twice at Belmont/Hampton Inn-Brentwood Spring Classic

Columbia, TN – Austin Peay’s softball team didn’t get the kind of start to the season they wanted Saturday afternoon at the Belmont/Hampton Inn-Brentwood Spring Classic falling to Wright State 3-1 and IUPUI 6-1.

Austin Peay (0-2) was limited to seven total hits in the two games, while striking out 25 times. They also committed five errors and gave up two leadoff walks, which both came around to score.

In the opener, Wright State led 3-0 when Austin Peay scored it lone run of the game in the top of the fourth, with senior Tiffany Smith and red-shirt freshman Kristin Whitmire recording back-to-back one-out singles, with Smith scoring on a throwing error on a ball hit by junior Catie Cozart.

Red-shirt sophomore Shelby Norton would have the other Lady Govs hit against the Raiders.

In Game 2, IUPUI scored in the second, fourth and fifth innings to lead 4-0 before the Lady Govs got on the board on a Cozart home run to center field.

Cozart also had a double, with sophomore Morgan Brewer and Whitmire collecting the other hits for the Lady Govs.

IUPUI would add two more runs in the sixth for the 6-1 final.
