Hopkinsville, KY – Senior Tucker Wallace shot a second-round 67, helping Austin Peay State University men’s golf team fend off a furious rally and hold a four-shot lead after two rounds at the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate, Monday, at The Links at Novadell.
Austin Peay opened with a 278 and held a four-shot lead over Belmont. However, the Govs trailed by as many as six shots in the second round as UT Martin mounted a frantic charge early in the afternoon. However, Austin Peay maintained its steady play, closed the gap and ended the day with a 280 which helped it maintain its four-shot lead.“This was a well-deserved start for these guys,” said Govs head coach Dustin Korte. “The biggest thing today is I told them they were going to be tested but they had to stay patient. They did a great job, I didn’t see anyone get frustrated, they were hitting and walking and I liked that.”
The Govs two-round 558 and 18-under par total stands ahead of UT Martin which shot a 284 in the morning and followed that with a 278 to end the day with a 562 (14-under). Eastern Kentucky stood at third the entire day, firing a 567 (9-under par). Belmont could not follow up its opening 282, shooting a 288 in the second round and is 12 shots off the pace.
“We have to stay even more patient than we did today,” Korte said. They didn’t know where they stood today. Tomorrow they know it. Once they see we have a four-shot lead it will at first put a smile on their face. I told them to enjoy it tonight but don’t think about it too much and come out here tomorrow with the same attitude you had today.”
Wallace, of Dickson,TN, began his day with a two-under 70 and followed that with a five-under 67 to finish the day with a 137 and is tied for second place. He is tied with Brendon Caballero, who led UT Martin’s second round charge with a seven-under par 65 after an opening-round 72. They both trail Morehead State’s Logan Hogge who fired a second-round 64 – two shots shy of the tournament record – after a first-round 72, his eight-under 136 good for a one-shot lead.
Junior Chris Baker fired back-to-back 69s, Monday, and is tied for fourth with a 138 that is two shots off the lead. Freshman Jonas Vaisanen opened with a 69 and added a 72 to finish with a 141 and is tied for 13th. Junior Austin Kramer sits two-under par after rounds of 70 and 72 and is tied for 17th. Freshman Luis Navarrete rounded out the Govs five-man team with back-to-back 75s, his 150 total is tied for 47th.
There will be plenty of action during Tuesday’s final round which is slated to begin with a 9:00am, Tuesday shotgun start. Thirty-two golfers in the 74-man field are at under par after two rounds, each within eight shots of the lead. In addition, conditions at The Links at Novadell should be even more favorable for low scores, Tuesday.
