The senior defender from Knoxville, Tennessee, Semaan picks up her first ever OVC Defensive Player of the week award.
Semaan led the Governor’s defensive unit, which only allowed three shots on goal in Sunday’s match against Evansville, and also netted an insurance goal for the APSU Govs when she beat the Evansville keeper with a header off of a corner kick.
It was Semaan’s fourth career goal, and her first since August 18th, 2017.
“Renee [Semaan] is such a great defender,” head coach Naomi Kolarova said. “She is the stalwart of our backline and keeps us organized and disciplined. She is fierce in the air on set pieces too, so we are really excited she scored on one this week.”
Mary Parker Powell, a senior keeper from Germantown, Tennessee, earned her fourth OVC Goalkeeper of the week award. She posted her first shutout of 2019 and the 10th of her career, when the Gov’s blanked Evansville on Sunday. Powell made three saves, and was the only keeper in the OVC to post a shutout last week.
“Recently Mary Parker [Powell] has displayed some of the best goalkeeping I’ve seen in a long time,” Kolarova said. “So I’m happy she got the recognition this week that she thoroughly deserves.”
This is the second season in a row that the Governors have taken two of the three OVC weekly honors in a given week. In 2018 Mary Parker Powell claimed Goalkeeper of the Week and Morgan Drawdy claimed Offensive Player of the Week for the week of September 11th. Also last season, Mary Parker Powell took Goalkeeper of the Week and Jennifer Smith took Defensive Player of the Week for the week of August 21st.
The Governors will kick off OVC play with a 7:00pm Thursday, September 19th match at Morgan Brothers Soccer Field against SIU Edwardsville. Follow along on Twitter (@AustinPeaySOCR) for news, scores, and updates regarding Austin Peay State University soccer.
